Damn straight it does. My parents were banana splits, absolute banana splits. My mother always had, still does have, horses throughout her life so having some nasty banana split with a horse whip at hand wasn't exactly fun as a kid. Another that stuck in my head was the full on beating I got as a kid the first time my dad caught me swearing. Not a few slaps, fists galore. There were plenty of times as a kid the thought of suicide ran through my mind, always finished those thoughts with 'nah won't give them the satisfaction'

So yeah, gooseberry fool upbringing.

As a parent myself I'd never ever think of hitting my daughter and I pity the poor strawberry floater that ever does.

Just remember, you get to choose the nursing home they end up in.

Forceful, fist closed hitting, using impliments is never OK. A smack on the bum for a toddler/young child is OK.

My philosophy was if you hit your kid - you’re teaching them that violence is an option.
I shouted at mine - that’s traumatising enough and only when it was warranted.
If you hit your kids you’ve either lost control of yourself or it’s the easy option because you’re lazy.

When my daughter was very young - my ex smacked her hand. I made it very clear that that wasn’t acceptable to me.

My mum used to batter my older sisters with a slipper or her hand. She hit me once.

Won't be me choosing that. Leave that to my rat brother and rat sister to sort out.

As Denny has pointed out a good shouting at works fine. My daughter skipped the terrible 2's and decided 3 would be a better age to try your patience.

This is a side issue - I'm not specifically talking about physical violence here - but when was it decided that kids mustn't ever be scared any more? Nobody is allowed to do anything that might scare a child.

Kids should be scared. At least a bit.

I spend 90% of my time with my son hiding and then jumping out shouting “BOOO!” so mine at least is getting regular scares.

This is good, but jump-scares don't really count. He needs Barry-level fear.

My nuclear option was always
“Any more of that and I’ll take you to see where I buried your real parents.”

If kids are big enough to pick up you just tell them why what they are doing is wrong, ask them not to do it, if they don't comply give them a warning telling them you will move them if they don't comply, then move them away if they do it again, then explain why you've moved then afterwards.

I work in a nursery so I realise that might not be applicable to all ages but it does work, you just have to be persistent so that it sinks in.

We never smack children, not just because most parents are against it, but because children learn by copying, so if you hit a child they're going to be more likely to be violent themselves and so are the other children that saw you do it.

It's weird though because I've worked in a school too and it's so much easier to fix a child's behaviour before they turn 5. It takes SO much more work after that, because all of there behaviours and personality are pretty deep set.

I got the odd bum smack as a young child when I was really naughty. Once I was school age the threat of embarrassing me in front of people at school (marching me in there to ask where I heard that language or telling my friends how childish I'd been etc) was enough to keep me largely in line.

My experience of conflict resolution training has taught me that smacking someone who is upset won't calm them down, so I'm not planning on using corporal punishment with my son. However, safety is paramount, so if they need some rough handling to stop them running into traffic or burning themselves then that's justifiable for me.

In terms of teaching, I failed as a teacher because I couldn't control the class. In my opinion kids nowadays know all their rights and none of their responsibilities. "You can't do that to me sir." "I'll tell my dad about you sir." "I'll get you sacked sir." The problem is that if you're going to slap about a trouble maker you may well find yourself heavily outnumbered very quickly. It's not safe for staff to administer corporal punishment unless you have an unhealthy climate of fear. The responsibility lies with parents to teach their children respect. Too many families treat education as a service industry and throw their toys out of the pram when the school's opinions clash with theirs. It's entitled gooseberry fools breeding entitled gooseberry fools.

Someone should start a Twitter account called Onion or Liddle. I reckon no one would manage over a 40% guess success.

Nothing that banana split says surprises me. Ghastly little man.
