I guess the question is whether or not you class a slap/smack on the wrist as corporal punishment. I'm not sure myself to be honest.

if the teacher brings that to the head then the kid is suspended and/or expelled.
how is hitting kids going to make them less violent/less likely to throw things at teachers?

In my school if they'd expelled everyone who threw stuff at teachers that would've been a lot of expulsions. Not sure it would've worked. And I'm not advocating that we hit kids.

It definitely is corporal punishment, but that doesn’t mean it is as bad as using a cane (or whatever).

A tap on the hand when a small child is trying to grab something dangerous is acceptable in my opinion. Shouting at them and then smacking them on the legs or bum isn’t (imo).

He’s saying that a huge number of kids would have been thrown out of the school. That wouldn’t have worked in the schools favour as it would have looked terrible towards the schools reputation, plus they might not have any kids left to teach.

It also doesn’t work for society as all those expelled kids have to go to school somewhere. It’s not fixing the problem, it’s shifting it onto another school.

hmm fair point.
most schools have a 'unit' where the trouble-makers are moved if theyre causing too much trouble. perhaps they go there first?

That seems the best solution to me. Get the little gooseberry fools moved to their own little unit and don’t let them disrupt the other kids. If a kid changes their behaviour then they can be allowed back into the normal classroom.

The only trouble would be all the cool kids would be in the unruly unit and it might be worth throwing a table at a teacher just so you can go and chill out in the cool kids room.

I used to be really scared of my mum, but thinking back it was the fear of punishment rather than the actual punishment. I don't think the fear exists today.

It does make me chuckle to think that when I was at school all the apparently cool kids were all the badly-behaved ones, who are now all on benefits/drug addicts/in prison/dead. Ho ho ho.

Course you should hit a kid.
Don't hit and adult! They might fight back!

A single moderate slap on the arse or thigh is as far as it should go, no-one should actually beat or punch their kids, that is totally unacceptable no matter how badly behaved they are.

A smacked bum didn't cause any harm to me or my siblings when we misbehaved as kids but more often than that my parents would just send us to our rooms and not allow us to watch TV or some other non physical punishment.

Once my mum hit me so hard with a slipper on my leg the mark was there for days. Noticing it looked like a horse shoe I told people at school I was kicked by a horse as that sounded a bit more badass than "my mum smacked me".

I do recall the odd occasion of being smacked when I was little and I think my parents did it right. I don't actually recall it hurting at all, so it must have been a very light tap on the arse.

When I think back I vividly recall the pain of dead arms and Chinese burns from my older brothers, and even that was a good thing as it meant I had a pretty high pain threshold at school so would not have been easily bullied!

If a teacher can't control a class either they aren't a very good teacher or the school doesn't have their discipline policy in order. That said you can add me to the list of teachers who aren't teachers anymore.

It used to be my mum that give me a smack if I was bad. I only really remember it happening once. I made a wanking gesture on my forehead at Santa Claus once, my ma dragged me out of there quickly and smacked my arse when she took me home. I picked up the gesture from my dad

In thinking about it, I think it's okay to give a child a light smack, but I think people should exhaust other options before. I don't understand the GAF thread on this, a lot of naming and shaming of folks over there.

I'm quite a strict parent, but even so I always feel bad when I give my kids a good telling off for being naughty. That said my girls are very well behaved and good mannered, so I guess how the wife and I dispense discipline does the job.

Hitting kids? I don't like hitting adults, (although some definitely deserve a good slap), so the thought of hitting a child is abhorrent to me.

I do remember my own parents weren't shy from giving me a slap across the back of the legs when I was a kid, even the occasional cuff around the bonce, but I don't think it did much good. I was quite a rebellious young man. Not sure if that was a result of getting hit as a child, but it has stopped me from exacting the same punishment to my own children. I don't believe hitting a child garners positive results.

My lad is too young to be properly punished, he just wouldn’t understand. We say “no”, move him away from whatever naughtiness he is doing and have put him in his cot a few times.

As he gets older, I don’t know what we will do, but I can’t imagine we will ever hit him. I don’t think corporal punishment really works and I can’t imagine myself hitting a small child like that.

But, who knows. He might drive me crazy and I might knock his teeth out at some point. ;)

Sit them in the corner and tell them they can't move. Put a dunce hat on them for extra effect.

Where do you sit on the social conservatism spectrum if you think corporal punishment is bad but that we should bring back the dunce hat?
