UK bees in danger as Asian hornet sightings rise

Image

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-66697968

Record sightings of Asian hornets are raising fears of catastrophic consequences for the UK's bee populations for years to come.

The invasive hornets are wreaking havoc in mainland Europe and threaten to get a foothold in the UK, with nests found in East Sussex, Kent, Devon and Dorset.

The insects feed on native bees and wasps, damaging biodiversity.

The warning comes as leading scientists release a global report into the threats caused by invasive species.

They say the alien invaders play a role in 60% of animal and plant extinctions.

And the economic costs have risen to more than £300bn ($380bn) a year across the world.

Now in the UK  are you afraid? Will you be moving to Australia to avoid giant insects? Do you welcome some truly wild wildlife in the UK?

I'd have thought you'd be the last person to complain about giant Asian monsters.

If you see a hornet, get loads of your mates to huddle around it and then if you all vibrate you can cook it alive.

One of those appeared in the beer garden of my local pub the other day and flew in to my pint of larger (as in the drink larger).

Luckily for me it happend as I was in having a piss so the girl collecting the glasses at the time dealt with it, leaving my cowardly self to just look at the corpse of the thing after.

He should have, there's no way the hornet was over 18.

If it was an Asian hornet and not a European hornet or whatever then yeah you are supposed to as they're invasive. I'd get in contact with the relevant agency because they might need to hunt for a nest.

I've got a phobia of wasps (spheksophobia) and bees (apiphobia). I've worked really hard to try and control my bee phobia and I've made real progress. As long as I'm not in an enclosed space with a bee I'm actually pretty good around them now. Wasps are so much harder to get over though because they are so aggressive. I was on a recent family holiday and the in-laws insisted on eating outside one day - I actually binned everyone off and went inside to eat because the wasps were just too much. My son knows about my phobia and I'm trying so hard not to pass this fear onto him - a wasp actually landed on his hand at the zoo last week and he just stayed still until it flew off like a normal person  - I'd still be in a strawberry floating coma if that happened to me  :dread:

strawberry float knows what I'd do if I saw a hornet (Asian or otherwise)

I'm almost over my bee phobia and can usually remain calm when one flies near to me, wasps and hornets however, still make me want to curl up in a ball and cry.

I can't even move my hads to bat them away or easily move away from them, once got trapped in a room with a massive hornet for half an hour and almost lost my sanity.
