I for one can't wait for the days when this kind of protest is illegal and I can sit watching uninterrupted snooker 24/7 whilst outside the planet completes its death spiral into oblivion! :toot:

its the nature of the disruption and who they are disrupting though isnt it - aside from getting on telly i cant see this winning any support from the wider populace tbh, and the people in charge certainly wont care

it'll make it to the yearly top 10 upsets at the crucible montage for a few years at least, so i guess theres that? but even then its just gonna be oh wasnt that a silly carry on

im not sure i have the answer but im pretty sure flinging dog shite at eachother in the sewers whilst the evil overlords laugh probably isnt it

It is a quandary fo sho. To do nothing is futile, to be non violent involves being a nuisance to someone somewhere, to be violent is to well be violent.

I feel like maybe trying to make the green party more of a political threat is the wiser option but I will admit my naivety when it comes to navigating Westminster and changing laws.

tl;dr i dunno lol we're strawberry floated

i think we probably want a mix of it all - legitimate political choices, protest but at achievable aims (we cant just stop oil, thats stupid, but we can go harder on renewable or clean), and violent protest at corporations and ceo's who want us to suffer

It works. Got people talking about Just Stop Oil again.
Some people will fantasize about the protesters being beaten up or call for them to be hanged. Some people will do nothing. Other people might consider their usage of oil, change things in their personal lives, vote for greener MPs, councillors, or join environmental groups.

Johnny Ryall wrote:Non violent protest is a tough one eh, easily ignored unless you're really strawberry floating annoying and at that point you lose sympathy.

But then you don't want the focus to move to blowing up oil rigs.

Very dystopian times.

Basically this - non violent protests are for good but the issue is unless you do something that severely disrupts people everyone just ignores the hell out of it.

Moving to violence is not the moral way of doing things, but sadly it seems to be the only way to get results. Look at French protests over the last few decades for instance, they get results.

Good to see the ruling classes succeeding in causing class division and convincing the working class that protest is something done by the middle class and should be made fun of.

"Just stop oil" is a much catchier slogan than "end fossil fuel subsidies and move them to renewables" while still campaigning for exactly that.

It's also pragmatic to go in with the most extreme position as centrists will look for compromise regardless.

Especially when the counter side will also immediately adopt the extreme position:

Non-disruptive protest = "Bloody pointless mate, nobody will listen!"

Disruptive (peaceful) protest = "Bloody lefty scum! Making ordinary people suffer!"

Violent protest = "strawberry floating TERRORISTS!!!"

The results for "Should protesting be banned?" were along the lines of "No 95.6%" and "Yes 4.4%".

While the results might look like a resounding win for sensible opinion havers, the bigger issue is what this question says about media positioning on this. A fairly prominent topical magazine show casually chucking out "Should protesting be banned? ⛔️" as a question on their social channels is indicative of a media strategy that is interested in polarising people on this issue entirely. Protest should either be so meek as to inconvenience nobody and command no attention, or it should be illegal.

I wonder if a majority of mainstream media companies - across both print and digital channels - are totally focused upon polarising opinions; they don't want consensus as that doesn't garner much attention and so they aim for extremes to get more eyes on their story.
