Destiny launches at an important time for both the PS4 and Xbox One. In January 2014 Gara revealed that the sales ratio of PS4 to Xbox One in the UK was 1.5:1, and eight months later this remains the case. That means that if the PS4 has sold 1m units, then the Xbox One has shifted 666,666.

The ratio marks a significant shift compared to the last generation of consoles. In the UK, the Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 by a ratio of around 1.5:1. Clearly, Sony has won market share from its competitor - and then some.

According to NeoGAF, this means that thus far in 2014, the Xbone has been averaging ~8,400 units per week in the UK vs the PS4 moving ~12,700 units per week on average. In other words, the PS4 is the new 360, in terms of UK sales, and Microsoft has a tonne of work to do.

Xbox One still way behind PS4 in the only two countries that 360 outsold the PS3 then.

Still, at least it's not Saturn/Dreamcast levels of fail like the Wii U :?

Can't find sales thread, posting in here.

Pachter said it looked like XB1 beat PS4 in SEPTEMBER. Turns out PS4 "won" Sept and sold three times what it did in August.

Ohand Destiny caused PSN sales to double (so that maybe explains why it's down so often now).

Somone post the fake Kaz tweet, please.

So that's up to 570k units, maybe more like 550k. That's a really, really high figure for a console's first September. I know the Wii did more in 2008, but we were firmly into that gen by that point. This is still the early adapter wave, with it's high launch price and almost all its best games being available on PS3.

I assume XBO also had a good September, but what was out on it that would make people think it outsold the PS4?

Yes?

It was sold with a free game in the US for a limited time, making it the cheaper option.

Indeed, I don't think a lot of people have made the leap to next-gen yet (myself included). I don't actually know that many people with a next-gen console. I wonder if the high launch prices put people off or whether people were still getting good use out of the PS3 and 360. For me, it is a combination of both. If they had been backwards compatible, I may have upgraded already (as I know I will get them at some point) but I don't want to discard my backlog of titles just yet.

I reckon this Christmas could be the time, and the first half of next year. Many consumers won't have backlogs like us, so will likely just shell out once the price drops (below the £300 mark for a bundle maybe) or when word of mouth picks up so that everyone has one. We haven't reached either point yet.

If it is any consolation to Microsoft, then they need to look at how the PS3 fared in its first year - it was expensive, suffered software problems and was a bit of a joke during that time.

Now, arguably, I would probably advocate buying one over the 360, if you had to absolutely only have one. My favourite last gen console was the Wii, though there is a case to be argued that the PS3 is the best out of the three - I pick the Wii largely because of a small handful of astounding titles rather than any its entire catalogue or hardware. The PS3 was definitely a slow-burner.

Interesting how they reckon a lot of the Ps4 sales have come from former Xbox owners. That's certainly the case with me. The utterly botched announcement, the inflated price (especially with its lower specs compared to the playstation) and the mess with Kinect completely put me off the Bone. Add in exclusives like TLoU Remastered and better experience with multiplatforms like Destiny and it was a no brainer. Like many others I was an Xbox customer for them to lose, and lose me they did. Couldn't be happier with my choice.

The 360 was easily my most used console last-gen, but I was almost tempted to ditch the Xbone this time around. I already have a Wii U, and was planning to go for just two consoles, as three last-gen was really hard to maintain and get the best value of. Two systems would just lie unplayed for a long time.

The sad thing is though, after having the pick of all the exclusives, I am not sure I can go back. It is no coincidence that the consoles I look fondest on are the Mega Drive, N64 and GameCube - consoles that didn't have to compete with shelf space and play time (though I got an Xbox late into the GC's life, and then a PS2 in 2007).

So I will likely buy a Xbone just so I don't miss out. The Halo collection is tempting and although I disliked Halo 4, I would still like to play 5 when it is released. Then I suppose there is Gears of War and Fable, though they have waned somewhat.

Okay, I can't actually think of that many more MS exclusives.

Ms don't have any real top exclusives anymore largely because they decide to buy them rather than build a strong first party structure like sony.

Eventually sony will be getting more exclusives from third party developers as purchases of the xbox one dry up.

There was a major turning point a few years back - ms and kinect and sony concentrating less on getting third party exclusives and building a strong first party outfit. The rest is history.

Kinect has been a weird one.

It actually had some decent sales behind it on the 360 and it was actually getting some exposure with families and young kids. Maybe it was just hanging on the coat tails of the Wii craze (that console was on the way out, and perhaps the trend for motion controls was too) and these sales were only fleeting before people got bored and moved on.

You don't really hear about Kinect anymore, and it isn't really anyone's focus. MS dropped the ball by putting it in every console and then changing their mind. If they wanted it to take off they should have stuck to their guns. Or they should have just made it totally optional from the start. Now it is a bit of a white elephant and doesn't really have anywhere to go.

This gen's HD drive add on that no one actually wants to support.

Why would they support it? Microsoft ditched it when they had a backlash about including it as standard with the One and now the userbase is split between those who have Kinect and those who don't.

And don't the devs effectively need to ditch Kinect if they want to extract the extra power?

I dont understand what you mean? No it doesnt 'ditch' kinect it just doesnt use it motion controls when the game using its power is playing is all, it still has all the voice functionality.

It was a genuine question, and I think you've answered it.

I must have misunderstood - I thought that the extra 10% they were talking about required Kinect to basically be ignored by the system. Obviously not, as you've said.

That 10% that was reserved for Kinect controls can now be used by developers to give extra juice to their games, but even if they do this Kinect voice commands are separate and still work.

Cool, cheers.

Do you guys tend to use the voice commands?

(Edit: just to clarify, I am emphatically not fishing here. Just curious.)

I didnt think I did until recently when I accidentally had my Kinect language set to 'none'. I spent a couple of days using my X1 without voice commands and I struggled. Using the controller is very fiddly to snap an app or record a clip, or even broadcast something. So, yeah I use voice commands for everything, from powering on sky, tv and xbox, to adjusting volume, snaping TV if a match is on to playing and pausing netflix to launching games and recording stuff. I'm a genuine chatterbox. :fp:

Missus uses it too and as since I've set my Kinect Language to English (usa) it works a treat for her.
