I'd have preferred gameplay footage but if this is by the Drive Club dev then I guess there's more than a good chance it'll deliver.

From the GR racing thread:

Trelliz wrote:Some quotes about Onrush are making me slightly more cautious:

There's no concept of position or startline or finishing position as such," explains Rustchynsky. "It's all about scoring points. So, if you wreck it doesn't matter - it's an opportunity to be put back in the pack, in the thick of it, to fight to score more points. If you fall behind, we put you back in the pack. If you race ahead, we put you back in the action. It's essentially all 24 vehicles on one track, racing around our version of off-road heaven...We know racing is most fun when you're side by side, bumping into one another, and we wanted to double down on that. How do we get to have that all the time?"

That...doesn't sound like something i'd be necessarily down for :?

Don't see the point in locking this thread as it's about a specific game, whereas the other is a general chat thread for racers.

Agreed, no need to lock the thread. Just change the title of the Racing Thread.

As for Onrush, I'm with Trelliz. Onrush sounds a bit meh. Sure racing amongst the pack is fun, but battling your way through and racing ahead to grab that all important lead on your opponents/nearest rival is what racing is about. I don't want to be put back in the pack each time I fall behind or race ahead. Onrush sounds like "Rubber Banding - The Game".

As already said in the Racing thread, why can't they just give us a racing game without the need of all these gimmicks? No one gave a toss about the clubs in Drive Club, we just wanted to race. I foresee Onrush being a flop.

I think this might be better suited for the general thread, but I can see why they're trying to think outside the box; the racing genre has shrunk a lot and there hasn't been any major innovation for a long time; there will never be a pubg of racing that turns the genre on its head.

Also I think racing games are much more difficult for non-fans to get into, even the more arcadey stuff so I can see what they're going for, however i think that the kind of trick score gameplay Onrush is going for died along with Tony Hawk, car nerds will give it a miss because it strays too far from the formula and the casual audience will stick to pubg. I want to support codemasters trying new things but not at full price and not necessarily this.

I’ve been thinking some more about this, and the fact is, OR is made by the Evolution Team, who in my opinion have made some of the best racing games in recent years. Motor Storm is the only reason I still have a PS3, and DriveClub trounces every other racing game on PS4 by a mile.

Stupid name though!

No, just no. Both GT Sport and PCars 2 are far better.

If his explanation there is right and it’s not a proper “racing” game, why even have you racing around tracks at all? Surely if it’s a car deathmatch it should be in an arena or something? It seems like a bit of an afterthought. Like they’d designed all the courses, played it and just thought “‘nah this isn’t good. We need a gimmick.”

Crash Time had some amazing sumo-style multiplayer modes, but those were as well as the typical racing tracks.

It must be soul destroying for a developer coming to that conclusion after pouring all that time into a new game project. Made worse by then having to go out and feign enthusiasm for your new, rather gooseberry fool game because you can't go back to the drawing board as the deadline is upon you.

I wonder what that blue haze is all about on the cars. I thought it was a weapon but it might be boost-related. Can’t wait to play it.

With multiple vehicle types and arcade-action racing, this is starting to look pretty similar to The Crew 2. They may end up launching pretty close to each other, too. As Buff points out, maybe OnRush has "Mario Kart"-type power-ups, though.

Jawa look at the quote from the devs i posted near the top of this thread, its not really a "racing" game at all; its about scoring points apparently, something not clear at all in the promo materials, unless they've u-turned on that and are making it a proper racing game after all.

Some actual gameplay - I commend them for trying something different, and I can kind of see how it would be fun in multiplayer, maybe if Motorstorm Mondays re-assembled around it, but I'm concerned that if it's full-on action all the time then it could get boring quickly.

Reminds of a Burnout game more than a Motorstorm one. No bad thing.

So what's everyone's thoughts on the open beta?

I really enjoyed it. It feels like there a few balancing issues, generally I feel like the abilities should be a bit more powerful considering how long they take to charge up. Bikes seem really underpowered and there needs to be a better way to see where the rest of the racers are considering how important positioning is rather than just being in front.
