Opt out organ donation is off?

Fed up talking videogames? Why?

Do you think the state should help itself to your organs when you're dead?

I see no problem here. What cretins don't want to donate their organs?

Judging by his post count, he'll be in here soon enough to explain.

Eh, I'm too lazy to opt in, but I'm not against the idea in theory.

Though I reckon your organs would have to be in a pretty wretched state if you'd want mine.

It does also raise the specter of people being murdered to force an organ donation.

People aren't murdered now for legal organ donations.

I'm sure my feelings were made known in my previous thread. This is nothing but good news for thousands of people.

Before, it wasn't likely that the person's organs would definately donated.

A hypothetical scenario:
Your child is dying for lack of an organ. So you go out and kill a large number of people. Statistically, the odds are now in your favour that your child will wind up with a donor.

In that case if I were the law I wouldn't give the organ to the dying kid. Epic lulz.

I don't want to donate my organs, They probably won't be in good shape for anyone to use in the long run anyway.

Why should they make it so everyone donates unless you say you don't want them to? What's to stop them turning round and saying you never did and stealing your entire body.

Utterly wrong.

Why does it matter? You're dead. I don't understand why people can't seem to grasp this fact. You'll be dead!

While I do see the benefits, the liberty of the individual must always be of paramount importance. The present system most certainly protects individual wishes, while any opt-out system would require a huge, and no doubt costly, programme of education if the liberty of individuals and their families were to be at all preserved.

At present, individuals and their families have the rights to determine how their body is treated once they have died, yet I fear that many people would unknowingly be in a position whereby these rights were removed. Unless people are educated about such a change in the system, ensuring that everyone knows how to opt-out if they wish to, then their liberty will be at risk.

The practicalities are also worth considering, as a lack of comprehensive education could lead to serious distress and problems between families and doctors once they discover that their liberty has been lost and their wishes are no longer worthy of any consideration.

On the whole I think its a great move but like Staying Dead points out, mine probably won't be fit for use by anyone else once I've actually died - my whole body is a quivering wreck already, and its not going to get better anytime soon.

I hate state intervation and hate anything that can infringe on civil liberties, but I see no problem with this.

There's no meaning to life other than to live. If me dying naturally then helps someone live, good.

Just as long as doctors don't try and kill me.

No, because I plan to be frozen, then woken up again when robot wives are cheap and efficient. [/jasper]

You die. Either your organs rot in the ground/are burnt, or they potentially save someone else's life. If you are too stubborn to donate your organs because it 'might deny your civil liberties', then you can also strawberry float off if you ever need a transplant.

Opt out, and if someone opts out, they are automatically at the bottom of the list if they ever need an organ. Simple, and fair.
