The saves are very unlikely. I don't see how it's possible technically, but I don't think anyone is really going to bemoan losing saves of that age. The second part of your question is a yes though, was confirmed by Albert Penello at E3.

I assumed that was just referring to those original Xbox games that are already BC on 360.

I've not kept up to date with backwards compatibility on Xbox; I love the idea of it but, as a PlayStation gamer last gen, I didn't look at it too closely.

I did have the impression that MS had done an excellent job although I was surprised to just read on PureXbox that only 42 original Xbox games can be played on the Xbox One/Series consoles.

42? That doesn't seem like many. 42 out of 997 original Xbox games... and yet the Xbox 360 can run 461 of them :o . I had kinda thought that, with Microsoft promoting the "play four generations of Xbox" on the new consoles, many more would be compatible. I'm not really digging at MS but maybe the back compat is not quite as attractive as I'd thought.

Obviously 42 is better than 0 but more would obviously be welcome.

I believe the understanding is that the BC team will continue to work on bringing more titles across but how many and how often is hard to know.

It's mostly a case of testing them all thoroughly, and making any individual adjustments, I would imagine.

I would rather they made more 360 games playable than focusing on OG Xbox stuff. There's not a lot of stuff from that generation that stands up today.

I disagree actually, as I've been dabbling in a few from that generation, and a few from the N64 recently.

For me, the GC/Xbox generation is where a lot of modernity in gaming was introduced - dual sticks, online, big open worlds, customisable controls, stylised graphics that resisted ageing better etc. I don't think there's a lot separating a great game back then, to a great game now.

Whereas a lot of N64/PSOne games are great but they have caveats. A lot of them have scars from the birth of 3D gaming, a lot of them can look blocky, basic or fuzzy, and in the case of the N64, a lot of them suffer from being built around the N64 controller.

They say with time travel, we could probably go back to Shakespeare's time and be understood, but go back to the Middle Ages and you'd think people were speaking in tongues and wouldn't have a clue. For me, the GC/Xbox is a similar watermark. The GC especially, has some games that have aged very well.

I've been playing SSX3 again recently and it is incredible how well it holds up in 1080p. The models and text are all pin sharp and there is no pop-in or build-up anywhere to be seen.

I was suprised when i first started putting my old OG Xbox games in to my 1X and finding that the vast majority of them were not compatible. I have been wanting to play my old copy of Max Payne 2 and the copy of Silent Hill 2 my mate gave me for a couple of years now. I'm going to keep holding out though, i know it cant be much longer.

For Microsoft to add games to the BC catalogue they also need to be able to sell them through the online store as well. This means that licencing agreements and suchlike need to be renewed for appropriate games and I assume the original developers or publishers recompensed. Some companies seem to be easier to work with than others, for example EA were willing to fork out (or Microsoft was) to renew the music licencing for SSX3 but Sega did not bite for JSRF.

I don't think this is correct. I mean ideally it would also be available for sale, but there have definitely been cases where it isn't.

It would be really interesting to see how small they can make hardware with the power of the Xbox with today's 7nm chips.
The Vita was pretty powerful for the time and that wasn't massive.

That seems to be their current policy with it. There may have been exceptions though.

Certainly there is absolutely nothing stopping them from making a general catch all Xbox emulator and building it into the newer consoles, so all you need to do is enter a game disc and the system just runs it.

Instead they want to make sure there are measurable improvements to these games (4K, HDR etc) and they want to make them available online for sale, which is where the rights issues come in.

Wish they'd just make updates to *some* and just say "we haven't tested the rest but you go wild and see how it goes"

Sounds like a good way to get an inbox full of death threats from people angry that their favourite obscure RPG has a graphical glitch.

Yep, Batman Arkham Origins wasn't on the store but was BC.
