I'm really pleased - the best five animated films are there. I'd like to see Rango take it down - honestly though any of them deserve to win it.

I'm surprised they didn't try and get Arrietty released earlier in the US to be eligible because the animated category is actually weaker than it has been in a good few years.

At first glance perhaps - but Kung Fu Panda 2 has some of the best art direction in any film ever, PiB is arguably the best Shrek film since 2, Rango is critically acclaimed, A Cat In Paris is joyful. Haven't seen Chico and Rita - but this was a year DreamWorks massively upped their game and I am really pleased they have been recognised for that.

I've only seen two. Transformers 3 (sound editing) and Warrior (Nick Nolte for best supporting actor).

Drive was a good film, but nowhere near Oscar Worthy

Too much dialogue, clearly.

Who from exactly? The countless nominations from all areas of the film industry speak for themselves really.

I thought it was a breath of fresh air and I'm not even a huge fan of silent movies.

The Artist was rubbish. I downloaded the screener, couldn't watch it because of the 4:3 ratio and lack of dialogue.

The nominees are perfectly decent this year but if you go back and look at the last two years in particular it isn't as strong a field as normal. I do wonder why they keep buggering around with the number of nominations they give in that category though. In 2008 it was three nominations, 2009 up to five, 2010 back down to the three and now we go back to five again. It doesn't even seem to be to do with how many good animated features are released that year because something like Tangled didn't get a nomination in 2010 but I'm sure it would have if it was a five nominee category.

This is the first year I can remember where I have not seen any of the Oscar nominated movies. I blame Rubix for taking up my time with the Film Club. ;)

Nor should it - it's massively overrated and incredibly pretentious and self indulgent. It doesn't deserve best picture or director.

Very surprised that Swinton has been given a nomination.

Fair enough Best Picture if you didn't like it but it's still very well directed.
