PostOutlook.com not recognising PDF files?
by jamcc » Tue Dec 02, 2014 3:34 pm

The title kinda says it all. Recently, when I've tried to open PDFs attached to emails I've opened in Outlook.com, they've been treated as some sort of nondescript 'file' file. I don't really know how to open them. I already have Foxit reader for PDFs but Foxit doesn't seem to recognise the files. It's all a bit weird.

e.g. Just now I got an email with a PDF attached. Tried opening it but it appeared as a seemingly generic 'file'. I then forwarded on the email to my work email and was able to open the attachment in Foxit. How does that make any sense??

Please help.

Thanks.

The only thing I can suggest is to save the file locally and open it from there, rather than directly from the email.

I would say the same save locally and ensure that the PDF viewer is set as the default for the file type. It should just open with your default application. I use the Win8 app and that's the one that opens from outlook.com for me.

Thanks but I've already tried that. It just saves a 'file' file. So strange. I then go on my iPhone and can open the same attachment fine, as a PDF.

Maybe it's some stupid setting I've got on Outlook? I'll have a look.

Thats what I've been doing :D

Can find stuff for email clients but not web.

Chances are it is down to the client you use. Whats teh PDF reader you use I'll see if I can recreate it. Also what version of Firefox are you using ?

You should check your file associations directly within Firefox, as there are options for how to handle different data. Eg an swf stream will be played in flash player by default but you can actually set up Firefox to just download it instead. Check to see what is being done with pdf files. This is how Adobe reader typically hijacks the browser to load PDFs directly in the browser plugin, something I hate, so I always set it to download instead when I click pdf links.
