It's not a bad thing. If you ever hit Gold the tricks stop working, so switch to Pharah. 'Til then, it's perfectly viable!

This is proving impossible to me at the moment. I know I'm not terrible, but I also know I want to improve. I can't improve if 3 quarters of the teams I end up on are terrible which is the current rate I'm experiencing. Now, could we constantly be losing because of me? It's possible. But I find it incredibly hard to have a good game, to eke out a good performance, if the team around me is fragmented and silent. Playing support roles as I prefer, my performance is completely entwined with the performance of my teammates. So far, this has led to terrible games, bickering and name calling. Like I said before, once you get on a good team it's great but I've found this to be an incredibly rare situation when you're playing with randoms.

With all due respect dude, you are in silver, which is below average, if you were better than your team mates you would be gaining rank. Your team might be doing things wrong but you clearly are too, so just focus on trying to improve yourself like I said.

Hang on that's not right. As far as I can see if you lose a game, you lose SR. The amount you lose varies based on magic, as far as anyone outside Blizz knows, but if you lose a match you are guaranteed to lose some amount of SR. Conversely if your team wins you gain SR. If, for arguments sake, I really am getting stuck with teams who don't co-ordinate, run off by themselves, quit mid game and generally strawberry float about and therefore lose all the time, how would I possibly gain rank?

And I'm not saying I'm better than all these people, I'm saying I want to at least try and work as a team, to communicate, to group and to push. An awful lot of people in Silver apparently do not want to do this. My friend who is Platinum has told me that at that level teams are focused and they talk, they actually work as a team. I want to get better, to be better than "below average" (thanks for that by the way) but when you're playing a team game with people who, in the majority in my experience, don't want to let you fulfil the role the characters were actually made for, that's very difficult indeed.

It varies based on your MMR, which is calculated by comparing your stats/performance to other players.
So basically you will gain a lot more rank than you lose until you reach the ranking that matches your MMR

Here's the details if you are interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comm ... r/dem4v3f/

People have created alt accounts and been placed at roughly the same rank, so it's a pretty accurate system.

Dude, strawberry floating seriously, stop complaining about your team, they do not affect your rank as much as you think they do. 90% of it is you.
Those players are just as likely to be on the opposing team as well you know.

Added a bit to my post to explain why I'm getting frustrated.

EDIT: "Your goal is to minimise your losses, not maximise your gains."

Huh. That's interesting.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to Fade, Taf: he just enjoys being contrarian. Check this out:

Fade, in February, wrote:Was playing competitive and did a good job with Mei on Hanamura so these dutch guys invited me to play with them. Such a refreshing experience actually being able to tell people that they can rush the point because you've killed 3 people. Showed me how your competitive rank is more about who you are playing with than how good you are. We lost a few times but it was fun because they outplayed us and our team was actually trying and communicating.

If you want actual competitive advice: I'm in Plat on PC (just) and people aren't as talkative as you're probably imagining them. Saying that, there are three in-game communication lines that are really important: "Group up with me!", "My ultimate is fully charged!", and "Attack the objective!" (for the last one, point your cursor at the UI symbol for the point/payload and press F). Using these, you can communicate that you want to group up for a push; that you're planning on using your ultimate to engage; and that the push is starting now. It won't guarantee you have coordinated pushes, but it helps a bit. Reinhardt, Lucio, or Zarya are great characters for this.

Fade, I'm not so sure if I'll be any good at this. Could you give me some lessons if you've got an evening free?

Thanks man.

Yeah, I'm chalking this season up as a learning experience and not worrying about my SR. I do make sure to call out my ult as often as I can, mainly as I'm Zarya most of the time and hers is an ult made for stacking. The group up thing...I've had a mixed response. Most teams I've found just ignore it, but it does work occasionally.

Oh well. Back to the classroom!

EDIT: Finished the evening on 1370. I reckon I'll hit 1000 in a week or so, or will at this rate, and I know I'm not that bad. Then again who knows. If the stuff Fade linked to is true, the aim of the system is to level me out where I'll play with people my own skill. Now, I think I'm more skilled than someone at level 1000. I don't know if I'm having the worst run of luck ever, or if I really am much worse than I think I am. Ho hum.

I remember the whining Fade was doing about his team's being gooseberry fool and him losing rank because of it. Does that mean Fade was wrong and it was infact him just being gooseberry fool back then?

Yeah, disappointed with the design.

I wasn't expecting Terry Crewes to be in the actual game but have the attitude of him, an over the top bad guy.

We already have Reaper as a hilarious hammy B-movie evil guy to be fair.

I think Doomfist seems pretty cool. I look forward to trying him out on the PTR tonight!

Sometimes it was me, sometimes it was my team.

But moaning about my team didn't do anything, so I just try to focus on what I can change. Sometimes you just get unlucky and have to deal with it.

That's the nature of a team game where you get random team mates.
