Why do people hate Hanzo so much?
Just played in a competitive match where someone picked Hanzo (We were on attack) and three other people basically started posting "HANZO CHANGE!" and "NO HANZO!" and "Hanzo mains never change" "You should report him"

And when we won they were still posting "Hanzo noob"

I think it's down to how good the player is. If it's bad Hanzo, you're simply a man down which makes a match almost impossible to win.

That's the thing, Hanzo has to be a godlike player to be useful, other heroes benefit the team by simply being there most of the time.

The biggest problem is Hanzo has to stand off the point you are attacking to be useful, so is immediately a disadvantage to capturing, or pushing an objective.

There is a certain set idea of what the competitive 'roles' are. You've got primary DPS (Soldier, McCree), flankers (Tracer, Genji), and Pharah who kind of sits between those extremes. There are anchor tanks (Reinhardt, or on Defence rounds Orisa can work), secondary tanks with high damage potential (Zarya, Roadhog), and dive tanks who can get around quickly to confirm kills, support flankers, and disrupt (D.Va, Winston). There are primary supports who focus on healing (Ana, Mercy) and utility supports who have invaluable abilities (Lucio-oh-OH IT'S TIME TO ACCELERATE is the obvious choice, but also Zenyatta for his Orb of Discord).

People are happy to see Soldier/Tracer/Reinhardt/Zarya/Ana/Lucio because that's a standard competitive team comprised of competitive roles. People are happy to use a non-standard combination of standard roles like Tracer/Genji/Zarya/Winston/Zenyatta/Lucio, which is centred around being very aggressive, or Soldier/Roadhog/Reinhardt/D.Va/Ana/Mercy, which is centred around being very defensive.

People get upset when you pick a hero that doesn't fit into these perceived roles, and some heroes are more fundamental misfits than others. It's not that difficult to slot in a Reaper or a Mei, who broadly belong to the tank-buster role. There will always be tanks to bust, so you can make it work.

The rest of the heroes are usually described as "situational." This is where people start to get really upset! I think people should play what they want, 100%. But if you pick a hero that I haven't mentioned yet then babies are going to start to get salty with you, and I think maybe even chill chaps like me will probably subconsciously try a little less hard because on some level we suspect it's a lost cause. As mentioned above, Orisa is best on Defence. You can sometimes justify a Widowmaker on Attack instead of a flanker for start-of-push picks, or a Symmetra on Defence instead of a utility healer for her area control and her great ultimates. The heroes I won't be talking about - Sombra, Junkrat, Torbjorn, Bastion - have a few very niche uses, mostly for stalling or countering specific plays.

Then there's Hanzo. Beloved by younger, casual, and more weebish players because "he's cool lol! sake!!!!" and "xD i get so many potg with dragon!", Hanzo actually requires an extremely high level of mechanical skill to play well. If you do manage to use him to his full potential, he's actually not nearly as situational as the heroes I talked about in the previous paragraph. But he never is played well, and in any case "playing well" as a Hanzo means "performing as well as a decent McCree would have." So it's easy to see why people get upset with the pick -- 9 times out of 10 you get an idiot, and the remaining 1 time you get McCree-lite.

I've never ever flamed anyone for their hero choice, but I do think people should generally stay away from Widow/Sym/Sombra/Junkrat/Torb/Bastion/Hanzo in competitive mode and I kind of roll my eyes when they don't.

EDIT: But none of this justifies being a big baby over a videogame. The real reason your teammates were getting upset with that Hanzo is that they are manchildren. If someone wants to play an uncommon character obviously it's just a game and they can do what they want.
