The concept or its popularity?

Both

But, more specifically to here, the whole approach attempting to halfway emulate traditional sports leagues with city based teams just seems odd and I can't see it working out.

More broadly, esports being competitive leagues of commercial games seems ill-fitting and backwards. The monopoly of the developer on each sport feels overly restrictive and easy to fail. It's like (incoming imperfect analogy) if Mitre were the sole owners and rule-setters of football as a sport.

The whole thing is backwards to how I'd imagine it. If I were to envision a workable esport, it'd have an international governing body akin to Fifa, but be open for any developer to implement the rules as set out and create their own version of the sport. A competitive first person shooter at its core is a pretty replicatable gameplay experience, and could establish itself and exist as a sport without being tied to a specific game and developer. It would give it much wider reach, broader appeal, and prevent fragmentation of fanbase and playerbase.

Esports still appear embryonic to me, and the Overwatch League as its laid out doesn't change my opinion.

This is probably 99% confirmation bias but...

A gloom has descended on Overwatch’s competitive mode. For over a month, players have reported joylessly grinding through Season 5 to redeem their former competitive rankings, a result of publisher Blizzard artificially depleting them. The community’s reaction, which ranges from sorrow to toxicity, has been depressing to watch, but more depressing to participate in.

So last month, I reached out to Blizzard, whose PR people set me up on a phone call with Overwatch principal designer Scott Mercer. Mercer confirmed that Overwatch now ranks players about 200 or 300 SR lower than their “actual” play grade. “We do that to give you a sense that you are improving over time,” he said, since victories would initially grant more SR than usual. Players could earn back their lost SR after about 50 games.

50 games is far too much to expect a player to grind out just to get back to the rank they are used to playing at. IMO they should just get rid of placements altogether for players who already have an SR rating.

I think part of the reason they do it is that at the moment the statistically average player is mid-Gold and they don't want that watermark to creep up. But no-one playing actually cares about 'SR creep' or any of the other nonsense Blizzard seems to think is important, just add 'Super-Grandmaster' one day if too many people are in Grandmaster (not that there's any way it would get that bad).

The SR drop from season to season has been a thing since SR has been a thing and this seems consistent from top to bottom of the ranking system. However, worth noting you do lose less and gain more SR than you normally would for something like 30 games at the start of each season.

I treat the placements each season as warm-ups, they don't seem much use for anything else.

PTR Changes to the latest build

Doomfist
Rocket Punch
Total distance traveled reduced by about 20% (This change has been on the PTR for a little while now)

Seismic Slam
Added a new UI indicator to show how much damage it will deal, and how much it dealt. Previously this was only indicated by the default crosshair filling in, but this is only visible when using the default crosshair. The new indicator should always be visible, regardless of any crosshair changes. Also, targeting this ability while in the air is now restricted to locations lower than your current height.

McCree
Flashbang
Now slows targets significantly when they are stunned. This makes them less likely to slide away around a corner or something similar once they are stunned.

Reaper
Shadow Step
VO and SFX distance dramatically reduced.

Reinhardt
Hammer
Swing speed increased by ~10%. On top of the swing speed increase, we've gone through and tweaked many timings and other things about the Hammer to make it more responsive. Overall it should feel a lot better to swing and make contact with enemies.

Charge
Impacting another charging hero (Doomfist or Reinhardt) no longer deals damage to both characters, but still causes a knockdown on both.

Zarya
Graviton Surge
Now disables all movement abilities of affect targets. This is similar to how Junkrat's trap affects abilities.

Hopefully the Rein stuff actually fixes him, I feel like I'd be throwing if I picked him in his current state. I like all the changes in the patch, especially the Mccree and Zarya ones.

And the first stage of the Overwatch World Cup is this weekend if that floats your boat.

France have elected to send Rogue, one of the best teams outside of Korea and one of the favourites for this whole WC, so that's probably not going to end well for everyone in their group.

I'd not have been able to hold my tongue at that tired old "Please don't call it sports" argument.

They didn't. They called it esports. The whole point in giving it its own name is to make it distinct from the other thing. If the definition of "sport" didn't imply physical exertion, it would've just been called that.

Did anyone play the lawnreakers beta? Made me realise how sick I am of this game. Just the fact that way too many games are out of yours hands and it's often a dice roll as to who is on your team

In Lawbreakers you actually have the ability to carry your team and it feels wonderful, I miss being able to have a significant impact on the match

It's like a cross between Titanfall, unreal tournament and Overwatch, its pretty sick

I see players carrying teams and exerting huge influence on games by themselves fairly often. I've carried plenty of teams myself by playing well and picking the right hero at the right moment. Sounds like you're stuck in that mentality that it's everyone else's fault, which is probably why you're failing to have any impact on a match.

Uh no, there are some games you just literally cannot win.

You CANNOT carry in overwatch you need your team to coordinate to take an objective, playing better makes that more likely but if your team is just funneling in 1 at a time and you are the only healer then you don't have a great chance. If you could carry then top players wouldn't have such middling win rates

I'd say about 50% of games you can make a difference to the outcome of a match, but 50% nothing you do will change the outcome, and those games feel horrible

Compare that to Lawbreakers and one or two really good players can carry a team, you have much more control over the outcome of a match and as such it feels more engaging

I'm ready to ta me a break from Overwatch at the moment. My SR was around 1700 and since then it's been continuous losses down to barely scraping above 1300. Most if those games have featured idiocies like Symetra/Bastion on attack, 4 DPS, one tank and Ana as only Healer on Defence, arguments over who gets to be Junkrat, rage quitters after one round is lost...

The game just isn't feeling fun for me right now.
