Competitive is a different landscape. You should try to pick your best character, but you need to remember that if you want to win then there are general rules for balances that usually work. You can step off the beaten track with it but you need to back it up with the skill to prove it.

If I was in the situation above, last pick and NO healers, I'd pick Hanzo too, tbh. I don't play him, and I'd probably even rather play a healer, but strawberry float the team for putting me in that position. They get the dick pick for being assholes.

This is the first time I've ever heard about a 'pick order' in Overwatch. Usually what happens in the competitive games I've played is that a few people instantly lock in the roles they like, and then the other people fill roles, and if someone wants someone else's role they'll barter for it. I'm not saying establishing a pick order is a bad idea, just that people don't seem to be aware of it, so it seems a bit harsh to call them dicks over it.

Anyway, to be fair to the Hanzo, in that GIF 5 people have picked and they have 1 tank and 0 healers -- I would probably be quite annoyed. I would pick Lucio and communicate to the team that Lucio can't solo heal so we'll need at least one other healer. It's better than locking in Hanzo, but still quite passive-aggressive. ;)

Don't worry, Zarya is a great hero that works on pretty much any competitive team -- and there are comparatively few Zarya mains out there. :D Just make sure you have a back-up character for the one game in 100 where someone locks her in before you do.

Ta! I'll be honest the main reason I chose Zarya is that I really love the character model (seemed as good as reason as any!) but I'm getting OK at her now. I'm trying to train up Lucio and want to get some practice in with Soldier too, just so I've got a tank, support and dps ready to go.

Zarya's Ultimate can be an absolute beast when used in conjunction with characters like Pharah and Junkrat.
Can easily wipe out a whole team at once.

That's happened a few times. I do tend to spam the Z key too.

I'm not saying it's a thing, but rather that it should just be common sense.

It's like if you're playing 5-a-side football with people who've never played together before. If you want your best team, the discussion should go "who's good in nets? Who can defend?", not a race to call dibs on the most forward positions still vacant. Locking in DPS as first pick is basically going "I'm up front! You're in nets!" before any question was even asked. It's an obnoxious move, to say the least.

I'd never played Orisa until this evening but i think i've found a tank i don't completely suck at; i played a couple of games and barely died while laying down shields and dragging people about with her orb thing.

Just finished my placement matches. I won 2/10 and still somehow ended up with a higher SR than last season where I won 8/10. I'm not complaining but that seems odd.

Placements don't really mean anything once you've placed at least once. It adjusts your SR similarly to how it would if you just played 10 normal games. Probably you did well in the 8 you lost so you didn't lose that much SR.

I found I did quite well in my Placement matches this time and won 6/10.
I'm still in Bronze tier though, and I know it's where I belong :slol:

I do find it annoying that you still lose points for a game loss when someone quits the match partway through though. It seems a bit unfair to penalise the rest of the team for someone else getting bumpain and quitting by still deducting points from everyone rather than just the quitter.

Blizzard announce double XP weekend

It's been an incredible year, and we're so thankful you were a part of it. To celebrate our first Overwatch Anniversary together—and the community that made it all possible (that's you!)—all players who log in this weekend on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One will receive double experience.

This bonus will apply to nearly all sources of in-game XP, including:

Time spent in a match
Completing a match
Completing consecutive matches
Winning a match
Backfilling a match in progress
Earning medals

It will also stack multiplicatively with existing group and IGR bonuses. The only experience it will not affect is your First Win of the Day bonus—which will remain at 1500 XP.

https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/blog/20845154

Starts 1am June 9th, finishes 6am Tuesday June 13th. (If I've got my time conversion right)

Won 5 of my placements and got the exact same score as I finished last season on. I saw one of the pros on their smurph accounts complaining that the placing is a bit weird this season as it doesnt appear to be starting from scratch, rather it just carries on from last season. Ergo what is even the point of the seasons if nothing is changing or resetting?

I have noticed though that Im getting consistent golds and sometimes silvers with whichever role Im taking which makes me question the ratings. Every match Ive won we have totally walked, and those we lost were usually just down to uncooperative teammates or bad picks. Makes me think Im sat in the wrong bracket, though I guess it needs a larger pool of played games to accurately gauge given that performance is variable.

Everytime I've been on a team with a bad Hanzo all they say is "I'M NOT CHANGING! 3 GOLD MEDALS!"

Yeah that's very nice, but we still lost the last round very badly. Medals mean sweet FA.

Medals are a fairly reasonable display of raw personal performance. Of course there is no metric for good teamwork so there is no medals to assign for that.

3 golds probably does indicate they are doing well. Hanzos have an easier time of picking up medals if the game is a total clusterfuck though, 'cause they can stand well back and run away when things go sour.

As long as we can agree that a gold medal for damage is the most pointless medal there is. I don't even put much stock in the medal for eliminations because you can be killing a lot of people and contributing very little to the actual objective.

Having said all of that, I'd love it if Blizzard allowed us to see your teammate's personal stats during a game.
