Overwatch

I'm beginning to understand the Hanzo hate after my last few Competitive matches.

It's always the last person to pick as well, so you'll clearly need another tank or another healer, and the last person who hasn't picked will choose Hanzo, then be utterly terrible at playing at him.

Has anyone else noticed something weird with Mei's Ultimate lately?
In several matches the last few weeks I've used it, gotten the speech line, the ultimate meter goes to 0....and nothing. No ultimate is thrown and no effect occurs.

Are you 100% sure it's not being eaten by a D.Va's defence matrix?

It's happened in matches where there is no D.Va

Just been getting back into this (think I last played just after Ana was released). As a result, I'm inevitably quite rusty and feel like the game's moved on a bit without me.

Anyway know of any good YouTube channels or stuff I can read up on to get back into it? Some of my lesser-used heroes, I have completely forgotten how to use, and have largely been sticking with two or three. Quite like Sombra though.

Total Mayhem game last night, we were going to lose. Payload was at the final checkpoint, we were defending on Overtime. I died and waddled back as Zarya. Popped my ult out of frustration more than anything and...it pulled the entire enemy team out of the checkpoint area and we won.

Dem feels.

I've tried to find overwatch stuff before but too much talks about the meta and what the pro scene is doing; i am not and will never be more than a casual toe-dipper in the overwatch pool so don't care about any of that at all.

I'm not too bothered about being "good" I just want to enjoy myself.
The only reason I've been playing a lot of competitive lately is because it gives way more XP than Quick Play for getting Anniversary lootboxes (Personally I think quick play should give a lot more XP than it does), but going into competitive you need to know the community is a bit more toxic. There are more 'right' and 'wrong' picks and you should be prepared to not necessarily play as the character you want to if you're hoping to win.
Of course that doesn't stop people who pick last from picking DPS when you need a Tank or Healer, or picking characters like Bastion when your team is on Attack and it's a Payload capture, and then steadfastly refusing to change even though it's just polite for whoever picks last to be stuck as it were, that's the reality of competitive.

Thought Id go in positive and try my placement matches to see what happens. First game, all the golds having a good time, game crashes.

Cant even be bothered relaunching to check it out.

That happened to me once in competitive too.

Sometimes if you relaunch quickly enough it'll give you the option to reconnect, but it rarely works properly.

I wouldnt mind so much but I was playing Junkrat and having that one in a million game where you run gooseberry fool with the suboptimal choice.

If you just want to watch some casual funny stuff I'd recommend Muselk, he basically juat does really well edited live commentary with friends. I think he has like 2 million subs. He is not serious at all unless he's trying out new heroes or changes. He quite often just does "meme strats"

Made the mistake of buying the 11 Loot Box bundle over the weekend. I was hungover. A bit.

Got a Legendary skin for Genji (the Power Ranger-esque one), Mei's dance emote and a load of random sprays and voice lines. I don't think I've ever played either Mei or Genji so I felt a bit hard-done by. Completely my own fault of course. Still, got enough credits for Zarya's dance now, so if I don't get it by June 12 I'll grab that.

Almost at lvl 25 too, so once I've rinsed the weekly Arcade rewards I'll be heading onto Competitive. Any beginner tips, besides "Don't play Hanzo?"

Expect to be told, regardless of how well you're doing, to change characters, get good or uninstall the game.

Yeah, expecting that unfortunately. I will try not to immediately hit uninstall. Do people tend to use voicechat more in Competitive?

I'm getting...OK-ish at Zarya now. I still have a tendency to pop her shields prematurely and/or rush into the fray solo when I'm at 100% charge, but I'm slowly learning. She seems to be a niche pick, at least in Quick Play, so I suppose that's in my favour.

To be fair here, the pick order is supposed to go:

Healers
Tanks
DPS

Anyone can play an effective DPS. Less people can tank, and less still can support. You shouldn't force someone to play a nuanced role because they're the only one left. If I was in the situation above, last pick and NO healers, I'd pick Hanzo too, tbh. I don't play him, and I'd probably even rather play a healer, but strawberry float the team for putting me in that position. They get the dick pick for being assholes.
