Just tried this for the first time on PS4.

How did Blizzard not sue this into oblivion as a blatant Overwatch ripoff? I mean my first match was a capture the point and escort the payload level and the characters, and tbe whole playstyle, just scream "This is Overwatch without the polish or charm"

Battleborn was more different to Overwatch than this and it got Overwatch ripoff all over the place.

Apart from the fact you can't change characters mid-game, create builds which changr stats and there are loads of characters different from Overwatch? Blizzard didn't invent the hero shooter and as far as i'm aware you can't copyright game mechanics or genres.

I'm starting to play less overwatch and more paladins on PC recently.

To be fair Battleborn didn't ripoff Overwatch as they were released at pretty much the same time, so were independently developed.

Paladins looks entirely uninteresting so I've not played it, but yes it looks very deliberately "F2P Overwatch"

Battleborn was totally different to Overwatch, especially in its story modes and vast progression system. And I prefer Battleborn.

Yeah, Paladins is pretty much a clone. But they can't sue for such things, can they?

Its not a "clone" though; the round structure is different, character builds are a thing to specialise in, you have a mount to get around quicker and reduce downtime and you can't change characters mid-game. That would be like calling every fps since 1993 a 'doom clone'. Yes, both games share visual style similarities and some characters are approximate, but writing it off as a 'clone' is willfilly short-sighted and a sign of drinking too much of the blizzard kool-aid.

And sue on what grounds? Does the game use any code or IP/characters from overwatch directly?

Sorry, it was me who introduced the word clone. I meant a looser definition, and I agree it wasn't the right term. But I'm not in any way a Blizzard fan, so that wasn't the reason.

For the record, I've played loads of Paladins and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact it's made me want to buy Overwatch, a game I'd previously had no interest in. So there's that.

One thing i really like in Paladins is the mode with a neutral payload; the first team to capture the central point becomes the attacking team and must poosh little kart! As such you have to be able to switch from attack to defence with the same team composition. As well as the card loadouts it borrows a super stripped-down version of the dota item system; buying buffs with currency earned during the match, picking one from a selection in several categories.
