It really is just a great sandbox to play around in. An unfinished sandbox, considering how some of the textures of the world look (and something I found further up north), but certainly a fun one. I probably should get some levelling done quick, considering I've been exploring areas where the Pals are in their 20s. Almost been knocked out a few times, and twice have (once when right by all my items from the first time), but I can't help but want to keep exploring. It feels dangerous. Exciting. And I absolutely will one day be prepared to conquer all these Pals who I'm currently running scared from.

Started a fresh save (granted, I only had about 30-45 mins of playtime on the previous one), with the aim of min/maxing a few of the settings to see if it could make it more playable to me...... It doesn't really, I've just caught my first Pal and it's doing something at my supposed base but I've no idea what. Also looking down the crafting item list and it just looks like one huge grind really. I don't think this is going to be for me really.

Edit, another half an hour and I'm bored sick of it

I tried playing it. I crafted a pickaxe and started smashing up a big rock. My character then got stuck and refused to move.

I respawned and the character still couldn't move.

I then switched it off and doubt I'll bother again.

Put in a couple of hours, other than a crash to dashboard 10 mins in it worked flawlessly. Can see why people have put so many hours into it. Like the way you can capture Pals who can take over the boring stuff like cooking etc. Other than capturing/killing a load of low level pals I've not been doing much fighting. Probably next time.

I saw the fuss in the press so gave it a go as its "free" on Gamepass. It's actually alright! Clearly not finished but it's like Craftopia, mixed with Minecraft, BOTW and Pokemon. I find the fuss about copying Pokemon on the character designs is completely overblown, Digimon and countless other games have their own versions of the most recognisable pokemon. Not sure why people are moaning about AI generated assets. If the AI generated stuff looks good then I have no problem with it. I remember the start of No Man's Sky when (arguably) they had AI generated assets (procedural generation if you want to get picky) and there were some utter monstrosities. Stuff here looks decent and could fit it any anime.

I'm sort of enjoying it. It's very relaxed, the automated resource stuff at the start is pretty good. The GUI is absolutely terrible but is functional and logical. It needs a better training explanation at the start, but Minecraft has zero training when you think about it so I can see this catching on. I need to keep going and see how things pan out in terms of the mechanics as I'm only level 7, but as someone who doesn't really enjoy turn based battles I think I could grow to really like this.

I wouldn't mind joining someone else's server if they need a hand BUT progress is tied to that server (4 player max on Xbox) and host has to be online.

Valheim is far better as you can work away without host around. :shifty:

Both in Gamepass.

Do developers ever say anything about why different versions have such ridiculous constraints? Why can the Steam version support thirty two players while PC game pass/Xbox can only handle four people? It's 2024, it's absurd.

To be fair it is in early access/game preview.

PUBG and DayZ launched in Game preview and both have had parity with PC from 1.0 on.

I’m sure the same will be the case here and already runs infinitely better than PUBG and DayZ did.

Valheim is still in game preview but has parity with PC along with cross play so fair play to them.

They say parity is the goal, and it's tied in with crossplay compatibility.

Part of the issue is to release an update on Xbox and Game Pass it needs to be certified by Microsoft and it always takes forever. It sucks.

It's the whole reason, according to the devs! They submitted the updated version to steam and Xbox at the same time (day or two before launch). MS take a couple of weeks to certify, steam don't certify.

DayZ, Halo, Sea of Thieves and many others all get patches/updated at the same time as Steam versions.... So do they just delay the steam versions to synch?

I wouldn't know exactly, but I would guess with the first party games you mentioned above that internally MS would make sure the steam update isn't submitted until it's passed their own checks (I would assume the internal management wouldn't consider it ready for submitting to steam until it's passed cert).

Dayz and Valheim aren’t first party and get patched at the same time… not arguing as such its just curious that some are synched and some aren’t.

Some of these games have cross play with steam so that probably answers the question and maybe they are held back.

Yeah that probably explains it - the ones that do crossplay with steam would obviously need to be the same version so maybe they hold it back on purpose?

Server transfers and migrations is interesting. Would be lovely if you could combine servers, or at least load a character up and move them (and their inventory) to a server.
