Is there anything you do which you think the gaming community see as contributing to the decline of gaming as we know it? How much do you care?

Me, I PAY MONEY for AVATARS. I went from this:

to this:

:slol:

First one was part of Virtue's Last Reward game+avatar bundle. 2nd one cost 59p.

On the scale of ruining games it's around about a 2, and it's more on the dumb scale than ruining games scale, but I still kinda feel as though I've played my part in normalising the practice of avatars being sold for cash.
I also bought ability points on the last Deus Ex, but I was enjoying a game I otherwise hadn't directly contributed to (it was a rental copy) and so I don't feel too bad about that one.

People who buy lootboxes are a part of the problem.

For me that depends on how the game is sold (free vs paid for) and the lootbox content (cosmetic vs game affecting). Though I think there's a recent Jim Sterling video on cosmetic lootboxes which may make me rethink that last one. But yes, I guess right now lootboxes are on the wrong end of the scale.

I'm extremely reluctant to buy new IP at a high price. Part of me knows that these games are likely to struggle and therefore fall in price pretty quickly. I'm completely aware that this contributes to less new IP being created and gaming becoming saturated with sequels and remasters, but at least I save a few quid. :fp:

In the past I put a fair bit of money into Star Trek Online, although mainly either buying ships directly or selling the lootbox keys for ingame money (the lootboxes drop randomly but you have to buy the keys) to then buy stuff on the game's auction system, so I wouldn't class that as part of the problem per se; i also opened a handful of csgo crates and was disappointed every time so swerved that soon after.

I do use the steam achievement manager to "run" games i have on steam to harvest the trading "cards", which i then sell to people who collect such things so in a sense i am enabling/profiting from the compulsive behaviours of others while valve skim a few pence off the top every time.

Other than that I refused to buy Forza 7 and NFS Payback on principle because of their lootboxes, have never bought crates in overwatch and rarely buy a season pass in advance so i think i'm doing alright.

Here's a big one that I fear will make me deeply unpopular: I buy a couple of crates in Overwatch whenever they run an event I like. It's not even for skins (I already have literally every legendary skin for my main), I'm just throwing a couple of quid at them to encourage them, in some small way, to make content I like.

It's not terribly rational (as if Blizzard need my £2!) but I feel bad about not paying for things I get hours and hours of enjoyment out of.

"I hear you support microtransactions now Karl! How'd you get interested in that kind of thing?"
"Who said I support microtransactions?!"
"Everyone's saying it, Karl. Should we all buy crates now? What's the official line GRcade has taken on this? Only, shitposting takes up most of the day, and at night I just like a cup of tea. I mightn't be able to devote myself full time to the old microtransactions."

You spend your money how you see fit not how others try and decide what it is and isn't spent on.

I have bought DLC for games, more so in recent years, although I now veer away from season passes. I have also bought themes for my 3DS; I have six or seven of the Animal Crossing ones and I do like them.

I have never bought loot boxes or randomised content, though. I did get some free loot box tokens for Elder Scrolls Online and I tried them out; it was like sitting in front of a fruit machine and the items I got were lousy.

If content is made available for sale and it looks good, I might then buy it. I dislike randomised purchasing and paying for content before it has been developed.

I bought tones of games that I've (will) never play.

I don't agree that 'gaming as we know it' is in decline.

With SoK admitting to paying for avatars, and Karl being all-in on the microtransaction train, I reckon GRcade will have purchasable avatars within 2 weeks.

At work we have a lil GTA crew thing going on. One team member spent £64.99 (!!!!!!!!) on in game currency and then said there wasn't that much he wanted to buy he just wanted to stock up while there was a 1.5x bonus.

strawberry float me that game is fun but I refuse to pump money into it when it's so shameless with its grinding curve.

I'll be honest, I once bought Oblivion Horse Armour. I actually didn't find that a rip off at the time. However, within the last 6 months or so I have gone full boycott on all games based around loot crates and micro-transactions.

That kind of mobile gaming model has the potential to crash the industry in my opinion.

I bought a card pack in Fifa once, it worked out OK as I got a good player. I also bought a CoD game when that was the thing that was going to ruin gaming.

I understand the problem with loot boxes but don't think it's OK to judge someone for spending money on a game they find enjoyable while so many gamers waste just as much money on a collection of games that they don't play.
