Long overdue to sort out using a password manager. Thinking about using Bitwarden as that seems to have good features and is free (always nice!)

I get how this will all be fairly simple to sync on phones, on PC and in-browser, but how seamless is this sort of service when I'm logging into Netflix on my TV or using my console accounts? Am I just going to have to type in the gobbledegook Bitwarden generates or can I do it more simply?

I use 1password and have done for a couple of years.

Logging in on your TV/Consoles - hopefully they just have a QR code scan login things because yes you will need to type in that gobbledegook. 1password lets me set how it generates passwords so I choose 3 random words to make it a bit easier to type in if I have to!

Ob Bob uses the basic Google password manager.

Wait — I mean I use the basic Google password manager.

Used to use lastpass until they stopped cross device support as a free feature, then they had their own security issues.

Now, as I only use Chrome browsers and an android phone, I just use the Google password manager. It's fine in browser, but unreliable for phone apps.

I use the standard Apple password manager. Seems to do the job. Am I missing something? (Don’t be rude.)

I use the Google / Chrome equivalent and it seems to cover all my needs.

I'm also unsure why a 3rd party password manager is needed for ordinary home usage. I'm assuming I'm missing something too but it seems to create an unnecessary additional security risk without added any added convenience.

I use an unprotected Excel Spreadsheet that I keep on the root of my Onedrive.

KeePassX on whatever device with the password manager stored on cloud storage if you want or backed up locally to USB or whatever.

Open Source and KeePassDX on Android is seriously good, even includes fingerprint authentication for the master key.

Don't inherently store your password credentials in the cloud, but back them up there if you want.

Been doing that for well over 15 years and virtually never had a problem losing passwords and zero subscriptions - occasionally when moving between systems and one is offline for some reason, but I'll just reset it or check the conflicted files or copy on that machine.

KeePassX lets you easily merge and Dropbox takes care of conflicts.

Also Dropbox for Android doesn't properly sync gooseberry fool. Use DropSync and set the folder (1 folder syncs free).

I guess on iOS you can use iCloud.

Or any of the platform specific password managers (if I used one it would probably be Firefox) but I'd rather not.

And it's free.

There are browser add-ons that will auto fill passwords for you. Copying and paste with alt-tab takes a few seconds and the clipboard is cleared after a few seconds.

If you have a keylogger or something accessing your clipboard then you have bigger problems. But I think there are ways to encrypt that. Apparently 1password does do that.

My basis for this thread was a Wired article on the best password managers and they did suggest a DIY method using stuff like Dropbox etc to store the passwords. However I don't feel comfortable enough setting it up to have any real confidence in the result, so I'd rather have a more off the shelf solution. My wife is also keen on setting this up so this just has to work with no fuss :slol:

Haha fair enough (not to infer she is any less than fully competent). Well I don't think there is any way of automatically logging into your PS4 or Netlfix however you can customise the rules for password generation or just change them on the fly with these things. I am a bit flexible:

Financial 16 chars, alphanumeric, upper and lower, most symbols + servers and gooseberry fool
Social 12 chars as above
Shopping (card not necessarily stored) 10-12 chars, not necessarily symbols
Random gooseberry fool on the internet 8-12 chars alphanumeric

Often combinations of passphrases and symbols.

I tend to spin through a couple of randomly generated ones based on custom rules (I still want to be able to type/remember a few characters at a time and potentially memorise) until I get one I like.

So for things that are straight up annoying to log into but don't have much risk buying loads of gooseberry fool on your credit card etc you can reduce the character count and other rules.

I think my netflix was 8 chars but switched to 12 after I saw someone else's partial card data show up in my account :? now I can't remember it. I didn't want it to be too painful to type into things like consoles and TV things. Because yes you will need to do that.

As long as you are doing better than password123 etc you can only go up in terms of security. You eventually realise it really is easier just generating a password than failing to remember what weird permutation of a system you came up with in your head on the spot last time.

One thing you will need to get into the habit of doing is that if your password is forced to update for any reason you obviously have to update your database or you're going to have the wrong one. I occasionally forget to do this.

Oh yeah, she's competent enough, but I suggested password managers to her so she's "left it in my hands" - from experience this means "under no circumstances strawberry float about building a hobbyist project that breaks at the worst possible time" :dread:

fwiw I set up the same thing on my partner's phone and it works, although I'm not sure if that's because she just uses only her phone to check/create passwords and none of the other platforms it can work together on.
