PostPatent Filed for Graphics Synthesizer Emulation On PS3

Apparently Sony have filed a patent to emulate the Graphics Synthesizer using the Cell and RSX, unlocking the final barrier for full PS2 backwards compatibility on the PS3. Or, at least, that’s what this looks like to my untrained eyes. You’ll remember our earlier story regarding the Emotion Engine, but this is the real deal, with the patent demonstrating a method to emulate both the EE and the GS.

There was a link to the PDF, but that appears to have removed at the time of us publishing this story. However, this link provides stacks of information (in Japanese) and shots of the patent for dissection from someone with a better grasp of the language that this author. With surely concrete ‘Slim’ news on the way we’re hoping that this will be a firmware update for everyone, not just for any new models that launch in the future.

Fits with what is in the FW 3.0 docs. Which is due in late September/Early October. Full PS2 BC ahoy!!!

It's a-coming! (Though my PS3 already plays PS2 games, so whatevah, unless they let us tweak the internal res)

Doesn't play 100% of them though does it? This will basically allow us in Europe the chance to have the full BC that Japan and America with their launch units.

Also from the docs on 3.0 it looks like games can be installed, but could also mean PS2 game downloads.

I've got a launch PS3 so I do have emulation with most PS2 games- but this is sweet news as FFXIII cut-scenes st-st-stutter. I think Sony leaving out emulation in PS3s was a big mistake because all these PS2 owners had no necessary link to this new PS3 console, sure the 360 doesn't play PS2 games, but neither does the PS3! -So many migrated to the 360 (as well as other reasons.) It will also lead to PS2 games available to download.

Firmware 3.0? I really hope it delivers. Emulation, cross-game voice chat, better friend lists & invites, new better integrated avatars. Or maybe just a fix for something non specific. The excitement is killing me!

If this does happen then Sony will have made me a happy man. For once.

Am I right in guessing this will make every type of PS3 BC?

Yes. I would imagine the Slim will launch around the same time as 3.0 at a lower price with full BC to PS2 on the box. Would do wonders for Sony before Christmas. Also a disc version of WipEout HD and Fury is rumoured for an October release. They need to have PS3s in shops running WipEout and Uncharted 2.

With my GCSE in electronics I can confirm that this will work.

Sounds a good plan, even though that post just put me off buying Wipeout Fury for a while.

Why Wipeout? The graphics aren't impressive in the slightest. Get KZ2 and Uncharted 2 on the go.

Ah sweet, that'd be awesome.

Backwards compatibility: The only company to do it right this gen (so far) has been Nintendo :fp:

Only on the quickest settings which makes the game unplayable by anyone who hasn't trained for years by catching flies with chopsticks.

God, I hope this firmware update delivers. Let's hope that it's not the victim of overhype. Unless it comes with the PS2 BC, a lot of people are going to cry foul, no matter what else it does. Could turn into a rod for Sony's back, this.

I want to play Frequency on my PS3.

Also: Rog, someone wants to have a word...

Wipeout HD is high up in my Top 5 Lookers Of The Generation, easily.

2.8 opened up more Ram for developers to use didn't it? Which is pretty sweet. All the documentation points to BC coming back and these patents over the last couple of months suggests we will have BC back in the PS3 sooner rather than later.
