PostRe: Patrice Desilets (creator of Assassin's Creed) got rights to 1666 Amsterdam back from Ubi

Someone on GAF gave their opinion on why Ubi gave it back.

Ubisoft wanted to block other publishers from picking up a potential Assassin's Creed competitor.

In 2016 however, Ubisoft is no longer reliant on Assassin's Creed, and it's incredibly unlikely anyone is going to spend $60+ million on 1666, so even if it comes out, it won't be a real competitor.

They basically stalled until it was a moot point.

Oh well. It's nice he got his IP back, at least. He should just hold onto it until he can fully realise the original idea. That or sell it to Activision/someone similar and really hammer that final nail into AC's coffin once it relaunches. What a shame that would be.

I hadn't heard about this. I'd love to play a game that is set in Amsterdam!

Footage from the unreleased 1666 Amsterdam, whose rights just returned to creative director Patrice Desilets.

The game would have been for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the footage comes from a build of that era, 2 years ago. It would have become next (now current)-gen if the studio had not closed.

The game's theme is "be worse than the devil," which is why the protagonist can control animals traditionally associated with black magic.

This footage shows a real player running through the game in-engine.

I can only hope that there's a publisher brave enough to take this on, it looks quite good. Very pretty!
