Looks about right from where I'm sitting.

Greenlight is a way for the steam community to indicate that yes, if this product was on Steam, this is a thing that they would probably buy.

Early Access is a way for con-artists to throw up barely functional Unity tech-demos and charge £15 for it. Of course, like any system it's been abused and some developers have uploaded quite good and oddly addictive little games which they are still continuing to work on, the scoundrels.

I was reading at the weekend about the kickstarter games, and how so few of them have actually made it to release and those that have, have not actually been any good. God knows where I found that article, but it is concerning.

Personally I have steered away from anything early access, mainly as I have too many games, but also as I have backed 5 games, and so far I have part of Broken Age, and a very early edition of Carmaggedon (Which disappointingly has had few updates) So I feel a little naive to have backed so many games.

Then you see some rather odd things, Shaq-fu got funded - Just. When you look at the page, I have never seen another funded game that had so many $1,000+ rewards that have been purchased, and some of them are listed as last day specials. I would be quite suspicious how that will go.

All in all I appreciate now what a gamble all of this is and how I should really just steer clear of any game until it is finished. (Battlefield 4 too :x )

Shadowrun has been a gift that keeps on giving. I really need to get around to playing Dragonfall.

Wasteland 2 is apparently shaping up quite well in Early Access, too.

Oh, gooseberry fool. And Chaos Reborn, too!

I think the worst thing I've backed so far is Takedown, and even that delivered. It was just a slightly odd choice of thing for me to back because I'm not really a fan of that style of gameplay in general.

Early access is a scam.

Kerbal Space Program, Kenshi, and Prison Architect are the only early access games I have. Kenshi is a bit suspect.

It doesn't have to be, but it's clearly way too open to abuse to the moment.

As a way for Kickstarter backers to get early builds that they're entitled to as part of their pledge, it does that quite nicely, but then you get gooseberry fool like Earth Year 2066 slipping through the net with people actually ASKING money for what is effectively complete garbage. So generally I would say that it's not worth the risk.

I don't believe I actually have ANY early access titles, I should add.

Good for you, but like I say, I have backed 5 games, I have 1 half finished game, 1 barely started, and 3 that who knows if they will ever be finished (I am sure Elite will be fine, but still)

That is a terrible return, and from what I have seen I am not alone

Project Cars, Automation, and Kerbals for me I think.

General rule of thumb is to go for something autistic and with a specific focus. Minimises oppotunity for disappointment.

I've backed:

Project Zomboid
DayZ
Dead State
Sir, You Are Being Hunted

The only one that's finished is Sir, You Are Being Hunted with the final version of that just releasing a few days ago. Dead State looks like it'll be done by the end of the year, Zomboid development was crawling along at a snail's pace and DayZ is DayZ.

Only thing I've backed on kick starter was Broken Sword 5 and so far I don't regret it.
Still waiting on the physical rewards but at least they're sending out regular updates.

The two things I've backed on crowd funding are Yatagarasu and the Pure Pwnage movie.

But progress on Project Cars is absolutely glacial. Sure, I get monthly updates from them but I'm f*cked if I can ever see the difference between builds. How long have I been waiting for the finished game, now? Two years?

My experience with Project Cars and a few other 'early access' games such as DayZ Standalone leaves me hostile to the concept of paying for an unfinished game.

Which ones? You only namechecked Broken Age, Elite and Carmageddon.

I've still got quite a few pending any real delivery myself. I think I've backed 9 total, and three have delivered - Shadowrun, Takedown and Banner Saga. Broken Age is about halfway delivered. Chaos Reborn had a working publically playable prototype, and Wasteland 2 is in early access and playable.

IN addition to that I've got Pillars of Eternity & Torment: Tides of Numenera. And Road Redemption.

I have bought quite a few games that came about as a result of Kickstarter though. FTL for example, off the top of my head.

It's certainly understandable. In most cases my hostility is tempered by my relatively tiny pledges.

Even the one I pledged the most to, Wasteland 2, is within the realms of what I'd expect to pay for the title retail.

It's also worth nothing that I can't think of a single Kickstarter game that arrived fully finished on schedule.

You might have backed a duffer with that one.

Glacial? What?

Ive been a backer since it was first announced, one of the weekly build ones I believe. Its easy to see evolution in it. Stability, vehicles, tracks, menus, presentation, optimisation.

Maybe you just arent tuned in enough to recognise it.

Torment: Tides of Numenera
Yatagarasu

I have FTL and Chivalry which are both former Kickstarter games, and I do rate both of them, I also have Skullgirls which is great and had some sort of crowd funding history but I cannot remember what. Clearly I must have dreamt this article which had far more examples of the development hell, and used FTL as an example where it all went right, however they had already started the game and even then they ran out of money, and had to work crazy hours and enlist the help of friends to get it all finished. Broken Age is another that went through all their money far, far quicker than they expected, and I have a very strong suspicion Carmageddon has done the same.

Ah, Torment is still in relative pre-pro. It'll be a while for that one, especially because - I think - all three of the RPG's are sharing technology. So, progress on Wasteland will be progress on Eternity which will be progress on Torment, at least technologically. We probably won't see a lot from Eternity or Torment until Wasteland 2 is done and dusted.

It probably doesn't help that a lot of Obsidian are probably still decompressing on the crunch from finally finishing Stick of Truth too.

I have backed Arma3, Dayz, Minecraft, and all of the DCS modules no let downs as of yet.

Like falsey says games with more focus are usually the best to go for. In terms of simulations you have developers and a community that are hugely passionate.
