Post[PC] Return of the Obra Dinn (Nautical Mystery)

Papers, Please developer Lucas Pope released a playable demo for his upcoming project Return of the Obra Dinn today, available for Windows PC systems.

Set in the year 1808, the first-person title tells the story of a merchant ship known as the Obra Dinn, thought to be lost at sea six years earlier. The ship, however, drifts back to port and leaves the player to board the vessel to piece together the events that took place.

The game demo is currently available from Pope's personal website. "This is a very early playable build," he warns. "There's not much content and it hasn't been tested. Progress is not saved."

We spoke with Pope about his latest project earlier this year. "People are constantly asking for a sequel to Papers, Please," Pope told Polygon. "People think I can make a game like this out of any kind of gate out there. Make one using TSA checking, or a bouncer at a club. But I've lost interest in Papers, Please. There's no fire there anymore. I couldn't make a sequel because my brain is not able to focus on that kind of project, at least right now."

I'll try it this evening, but

Exactly what I was thinking.

The kind of person who thought it was clever to say "the cake is a lie" any time someone mentioned cake post-Portal, I'll bet.

I thought a Papers, Please sequel would be a good idea, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Chuck Norris let Jorji Costava through on day 3 and didn't get a warning slip.

the more internet sites such as Reddit and the like become more mainstream the more we get recycled garbage memes from 4-5 years ago.

Make it stop

I can see the art style having a lot of detractors, but I think it looks incredible. The detail on the crew members, frozen in time, is stunning.

*Bump*

I'm not one to resurrect older threads but this came out yesterday and I spent about an hour and a half with it last night.

Long story short I'm enjoying it. It's very much a mystery where you have to piece together what happened to the 60 people on-board the ship. There's not too much to interact with beyond opening some doors and the remains of the crew, but the little vignettes showing the moment of each persons death are both revealing and yet still quite vague. It's often quite easy to tell "how" someone died, but who the victim is and who killed them (If anyone) seems to require a bit more deduction. It's very much a logic puzzle, wrapped around a walking sim. Though I don't really like to describe it as that as I feel it does the game a disservice.

The art style is fantastic as well and has settings to emulate a few different types of old monitors and colour palettes (Though they are all monochrome). Really reminds me of the artwork you would find in old novels and absolutely fits the setting and atmosphere of the game.

So yeah I'm enjoying it so far. Looking forward to dipping into it further over the next few days and uncovering more of the story and identifying more of the crew.

Anyone else been playing it?

EDIT: Oh and Eurogamer gave it an Essential rating. Not sure I'd go that far, but I do think it's really rather good.

I would definitely recommend it so far. Reviews across the board seem very positive as well.

I bought this over the Christmas break on steam, it's really fun so far. I like how each vignette is set up with a reveal as it opens, then you step back and appreciate it even more from different angles.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

It's a wonder of game design. It overstays its welcome a tiny bit, and there are some...issues about the way it handles expectations of race, but it's one of those unique examples of original mechanical design that stands alone amongst its peers.

Is it all consoles or just Switch? I'm wondering if there is a chance it will come to game pass (my back log is so big i can wait a few months to find out), or if its skipping Xbox altogether.

Cannot wait to play this. I know I could be playing it right now on PC, but... yeah, no real reason why I'm not. (I have a capable PC, but I need to be in the right mood to play PC games that aren't WoW.)

SPOILERS! Short but really interesting video on challenges that faced the dev on localising the game.
