PostPC won't start after Windows Update
by duckthatbites » Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:49 pm

Ok so I turned on my PC this morning and a Windows Update was available. So I downloaded the updates and restarted the computer as prompted.

But now, XP won't boot up at all.

I get the black screen which asks me which mode to start in (3 different Safe modes, Last Known config, or normal Windows). Selecting any of these does not work.
I see the Windows XP loading screen for about 2 seconds, then a flash of a blue screen, and it resets itself. This process just keeps happening over and over again.

I'm rubbish computer tech stuff so I have no idea what to do :( Luckily my college work for this semester is all done and I have 2 weeks to get the thing working again, but I'd really like to recover my stuff from the harddrive if possible.

Can anyone help? :(

This is a guess but here goes. If I remember correctly Windows XP auto restarts if there's a blue screen of death hence it getting caught in this cycle, sudden blue screen flash and then a restart. I haven't the foggiest how you'd go about stopping it doing that though.

What machine have you got? Is it a home built one or a manufacturer based one? If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it would have something to do with your hard-drive controller driver.

Go in your BIOS and see if there's a SATA controller 'IDE', 'Compatibility' or 'Legacy' mode.

If it was working before and isn't now, try Safe Mode. If you can get in, you should be able to roll back the update.

Thanks DM, turns out it was a SATA controller problem, got the old man to sort it as he's a bit of a techie.

I'm glad it wasn't an actaul harddrive problem, my stuff is all intact.

I decided to end my use of XP and ended up buying a new terabyte harddrive and sticking Windows 7 on it. Much better :)
