Yeah, I'm lucky enough to have a pretty good income and they've now exceeded what I'm willing to pay for a GPU. I bought that 1080ti which I thought was excessive but that is way beyond that.

The only plus side about PC gaming at the moment is that you can build a 60fps 1080P machine for a reasonable amount of money. It's just if you're trying to hit 4K with Ray Tracing that you'll be paying the mad money.

Built my current PC back in 2016 for a total of £1000 and it still devours pretty much every game I can throw at it at 1080p. Even at 1440p it barely struggles with super heavy hitters like Tomb Raider.

To think that one component costs £300 more than my entire setup is...weird to me.

I think mine was somewhere round £900 (also back in 2016) and is more than adequate for my gaming needs - mostly Gamecube and PSP emulation (upscaled to 1080p) with the occasional newer game like Civ VI or XCOM2.

£1300 for just the GPU is insane.

Attention everybody, whether your graphics card is old or new, or does reflections well or not.

One of the greatest games of all time, and the best game by Irrational Games - SWAT 4 is on sale for £3.99 on gog.com

If you don't own it, you owe it to yourself to buy it and experience the tension of clearing rooms whilst Karl shoots you "accidentally" with a bean bag shotgun.

Yeah, I'm still using a GeForce 9800GTX+ I got for £45 on eBay in 2009. The thing is, there are so many games available digitally that still hold up, you can play thousands of perfectly enjoyable games.

So strawberry float the high end to be honest, it's the same with my retro gaming, I'm just playing stuff from 10 years ago and really I don't care.

I remember the days you could get a decent machine for £600 if you were thrifty with a few parts. There used to be articles about building a PC with better performance than the then current consoles for less cost. Those were the days.

GTX 1070 still costs more new than it did when I bought mine about two years ago. Insanity. Going by that, I can't hold much hope for the mass market tier Turing cards being below £600-700, if we are lucky.

The potato masher /potato masher pro series is still going on YouTube, but even then, the cost of the parts in the machine are higher now than they were when it was built, meaning it would now be more expensive than the "4K" consoles. He still playtests a lot of big new releases on it, and it goes a long way to showing how even a low-mid range set up still generally handles 1080p60fps with ease.

Maybe the future really is the cloud when nobody can afford a GPU anymore so just access the same one over the network.

Kind of related, and I go into this a little more in the Emulation thread, but I just bought a refurbed Dell Optiplex 3020 and a GTX 1030 based on this video:

Arrived yesterday and while I've not got the graphics card yet I'm very impressed with how well it managed Dolphin and Citra just using the built in Intel Graphics chip. Citra ran Metroid and Ocarina/Majora's Mask at what appeared to be full speed (At their native resolution to be fair) and Dolphin allowed me to get 40-60fps on F-Zero GX straight out of the box.

I'm expecting a significant bump to the performance once I get the card into it.

All that for the low price of around £190 (Half of that is the Graphics card).

Plus it's small enough that I can easily take it round to friends houses and just hook it up.

I would guess that a 1030 would handle 60fps at 1080p with ease, be interesting to see what kind of results you get.

I've got an old half sized 660ti I don't use for anything that I might try and shove in a tiny case at some point. I've got a full sized 970 as well that needs to be used. Really not idea what I'd get out of Dolphin with the 660ti but would hope to get something approaching 60fps at 1080p on the 970. If the 660ti gives good results I'll look into buying a Pico PSU to run it in a small box.

Going by the video I posted above (This guy does some pretty good emulation based ones) I "should" be able to do 4K on Dolphin, but I'm not sure about that to be honest. It's going to be hooked up to a 4KTV so I can test it out, but I'll be more than happy with 1080p 60fps.

Best part is it's small enough to stick in a bag and take to a mates house, so I'm planning on showing it off to my Brother-in-law and a couple of other mates in a week or two. Gonna pick up another Dolphin Bar for Wii stuff and combined with my Mayflash N64 adapter I'm sorted for playing just about everything I want in a reasonably authentic manner.

Well this has definitely just triggered an Amazon purchase. I didn't know about the sensor bar until now.

Sounds like a good setup you'll have. Especially as I still find all of the older consoles much better for multiplayer and being able to take it round a friends with 4 controllers will be perfect.

The Dolphin bar is such a treat, especially given how many control configurations Wii games can have. Between that and the Wii U/Switch Gamecube USB adapter it makes things much easier in being able to use original pads without configuration.

It will be once it's done. Just waiting on my graphics card to get it up to the spec I need, though I'll probably review that a bit down the line to see if I can get it to run Cemu and RPCS3.

The Dolphin Bar is essential really. If you have Wiimotes it basically turns your PC into a HD/4K Wii. I just finished playing through the Metroid Prime Trilogy with it and in terms of the controls I've found it indistinguishable from the real system.

EDIT: Oh and it works with the accessories as well. I've been playing Rock Band using it.

Are there replica wiimotes that you can buy to use with the Dolphin Bar then? I gave my Wii away years ago so I don't have any controllers left and I imagine the supply of second hand ones is limited/expensive.

It's arriving tomorrow and I've got the day off, so I'll have a play around. I picked up 4 of the WiiU Gamecube USB ports when Argos were selling them off for £5, just in case I ever needed them for new builds or they broke.

Where do you get the Dolphin Bar from and how much?

Yes?
