Because I'm lazy I don't read up on these things but is there likely to be a low powered card that draws power only from the slot like the 1050ti?

Yes?

If it's anything like the 10 series launches then such a card would be about 6 months from the 1180's release.

Anyone know much about overclocking graphic cards?

I've just been experimenting with my 1050ti and increased GPU speed by 200 MHz. This has resulted in a more than 10fps increase in the Heaven GPU test and also in the quick test I did on Quantum Break.

Seems difficult to believe you can get something for nothing, so is there a risk?

You're pushing the hardware harder, so potentially shortening the lifespan and also upping the power consumption.

Shouldn't shorten the lifespan as long as you can keep the temp below 70 -75 as it's the high temps that will shorten the lifespan due to expanding with heat etc. I use Afterburner to do mine and the temps always stay below 70.

I've had a look around the internet and some people have increased the speed by a similar amount and also increased memory speed (which I haven't done). Temperature in tests seemed to max out at about 67 so hopefully this is a fairly safe increase.

Overclocking is so easy these days that you'd be silly not to apply at least some increase to your hardware, otherwise you're just missing out for no good reason.

Some cards and CPUs are better suited to it than others but it's worth the little bit of time it costs to find a good balance for your system.

Anyone noticed any issues with Steam recently around controllers? My controller recently wouldn't stop rumbling in Quantum Break so had to go into the game settings to turn it off

Today, same thing happened in Sniper Elite 3 so it probably isn't QB as I thought. When I went into big picture mode that kept crashing with a DLL error. Not sure at the moment if the issue is with Steam or the controller because when I used it in my son's X1 yesterday, no rumbling issues.

Yeah I've had the infinite rumble happen a few times here and there, is annoying. I also get weird issues with the Steam overlay sometimes not launching with a game, so my Steam controller is just on the desktop config instead of the game's tailored config.

Core clock is set at +200 on mine and just increased Memory clock to +700, I'm sure I read they benefit more from Memory clock, before 700 I had it at +450.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5946 ... _Showdown/

Crytek's Hunt: Showdown is having a free weekend. Had my eye on this for a while, Left 4 Dead/PUBG inspired online shooter. Looks rad. DLed.

EDIT:

Just had a quick go: 2 two man teams are let loose on a map and have to hunt down 2 boss monsters. It's co-op competitive, so if you encounter the other hunters it's be or be killed.

It's decent enough, but as with all online team shooters you are severely limited by your partner's skillset, and playing with randos is never going to be all that satisfying.

It really is a hybrid of the two. As you gather clues to your target's whereabouts the map shrinks (sort of, your inventory map item blacks out sections forcing you close to the target). If both teams are finding clues, it should lead to the L4D equivalent of a Tank fight with real person opposition thrown in for good measure.

It's an interesting idea, but like I say it's no good at all with randos.

Thinking about getting this Razer Blade 15 when I come back from my holidays in late August, early September (depending on how much I actually spend on holiday :shifty: ). I want to replace my desktop, because it takes up too much room, but I'm slightly concerned there seems to be a lot of complaints online about Razer products dying. I don't want to spend all that money and have it die in a couple of years. Does anyone here own a Razer laptop, or have any experiences with them? It's expensive, but I detest the look of gaming laptops, and I love how sleek and light the laptop is. I'm also tempted to just get a Dell XPS 15, which will give me less to play with gaming wise, but probably be more than suitable for what I'll likely use it for (WoW, PUBG, that Trails game that didn't come to PSP, and a few YS titles I missed on PSP).

I want to return to WoW, but annoyingly I think I've somehow lost my character. I was checking on the Armoury and there's now another character with my name on my server. I assume there's some kind of inactivity thing that freed up my character name / deleted my character? Extremely annoying when one of the reasons for return is to reconnect with old friends / guild. I have no idea if I'll get to assign a new character name, if one was randomly given to me, if I can even get my character back. Don't really want to pay a subscription fee to find out either. Maybe it's a good thing, slightly concerned WoW would take over my life again. :shifty:

Forgot to mention, I also want to emulate some stuff since Nintendo killed VC. Nothing more recent than GameCube. Would a Dell XPS 15 be capable? I have zero knowledge about this kind of stuff.

@BAKA: Have you considered building a Mini ITX PC? The motherboard form factor is a little over 6 inches square, and the cases are usually light and slim. You end up with a 'real' PC but it won't take up much room at all. If you're just looking at one mid-range GPU then you shouldn't have any trouble fitting it onto the board and getting a case with enough room for it (but do your research).

I suggest this because it will be much cheaper and probably more reliable than that £2000 laptop.

I do actually need a laptop in general, and was hoping to kill two birds with one stone. But I'll definitely look into a Mini ITX PC. I have never heard of it before. But honestly, it's not just the desktop I want rid of, but the monitor, speakers, wires, tat, it just doesn't fit into my lifestyle any more, and I never need to use the CD / DVD drives either. Laptop makes most sense. But yeah, reliability... :?

I'd recommend taking a look at PC Specialist for gaming laptops too before you make a decision. When I was looking a few years ago I found them a bit cheaper for same spec, or higher spec for same price than other places.

They're basically Clevo units.

Rising Storm 2 seems alright still to me. Had a great couple of games last night.

I was tempted by Monster hunter world till I had seen the price (£50, even on key sites it's over £40), then the server issues it is having and the lack of control you have (you can't even turn off mouse acceleration) pass.

BAKA the other problem with gaming laptops is theyre often insanely heavy. id recommend checking the weight, adding 500g or so for the power cable, and then putting the equivalent in your daily backpack/rucksack and see if its bearable.
im leaning towards Karl's suggestion of a mini-pc and a notebook for travelling.
im actually thinking of going for a microsoft surface go for my next 'work' laptop.
