Switched to a Ryzen 2700X, Asus X470-I and some less water infused Corsair LPX RAM. I also built a case from scratch to house it all. It's a very small 20 X 20 X an undisclosed height that will be somewhere around 35ish cm. I've finished the frame but need to work on the actual casing.

I'm sticking with air this time because strawberry float water, so it'll be interesting to see what kinds of temps I get in such a small space once it is clad.

Why build your own case?

Because no one makes the case that I want or anything like the case that I want.

The 2080 series reviews are out and it's not good. 2080 is disappionting compared to a 1080ti and the 2080TI is massivley overpriced for what you get. Some reviwers are saying not to buy.

Ouch.
1080ti purchase last year justified it seems.

And I guess this means the 10 series are going to hold their prices, then. :fp:

I was going to get the 2080 FE however I bought a factory clocked 1080Ti for over £150 cheaper than the 2080 FE. Seems a pointless purchase to me.

That said if you have money to burn the 2080 Ti is a great card.

No news on the 2070 but I can't see it being a hero card.

Damn, I have just watched the hardware unboxed benchemark vid. 2080 is a bit embarassing (might be the drivers).

Interesting, the early sounds I was hearing were that a 2080 was bench-marking somewhat above the 1080Ti.

Oh well, may stick with my 970 a bit longer then!

Link to these reviews? The first few I googled were all very positive:

5/5

...impressive as upgrades over the previous generation, especially if you've been salivating at the thought of solid 4K 60 FPS performance.

The RTX 2080 general performance is impressive, and the jump from the GTX 1080 is noticeable and worth the investment

I posted one in the thread already.

2080 vs 1080 is good but the 2080 vs 1080 Ti is poor for the price you have to pay. If I get a 2080 for £750 I expect it to be a lot better than the top card from the last gen which I can pick up for £150 to £200 less brand new, not 13% on average. I would hold off till the next launch or pick up a 1070 ot 1080 and save cash.

The card is fine, and what nVidia is trying to do is commendable and, we think, an eventual future for gaming technology. That does not mean that it's worth the price at present, however. The RTX 2080 is poor value today.

https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3 ... tx-1080-ti

The 2080 Ti seen from a 1080 Ti purely based on shading performance is impressive, but the big question remaining is that extra 25 to 40% extra performance worth the price tag? Purely based on rasterized/shaded game performance I would say no.

It will be interesting to see how performance stacks up when some of the newer features the RTX cards offer are actually implemented in games though - DLSS and some of the new shading tech could see large performance gains against 10XX cards once they become standard.

How big was the leap between the 980 and 1080 back in the day?

not worth it for either imo. Unless you have to have 4k 60fps go for 2080ti.

I remember when my top end reference X1800XT 512MB cost £300. That day will not come again. Thanks for turning the graphics market into the stock exchange, bullshit prospectors.

Yeah, it's mad. In 2008 my EVGA 9800GX2 cost me £337.98. Taking into account inflation that's roughly £430ish in today's money. The EVGA RTX 2080 ti costs £1319.99.

So the top of the range card in 2018 is more than triple the top of the range card in 2008.

I'd imagine that the cost issues around buying a PC for gaming must now be having an impact on sales of such machines. There's no way I'd want to spend that kind of money on a gaming setup.

Edit: Well, I guess I might if I had the money. It's definitely not a mass-market solution, though!
