I think you'll definitely notice some improvement, but games are usually more GPU dependant. Dead rising 3 is recommended for a gtx 670 as minimum, which is a bit more powerful that the 750ti in terms of cuda cores etc.I think you could manage 1080p with some graphic settings tinkering. Check your steam inventory, you probably just got some steam cards for the game. Kinda pointless, but you can sell them on the marketplace or craft a funky badge for your profile...

Death's Head wrote:So, thinking about the Steam controller. Not sure if I will like this due to the mixed reviews, but have £20 of Steam credit so assuming I can use this towards it, will only cost £7.99. Before I stump up the cash, what kind of games is this best suited to or can it be used for all games?

Personally, having bought one a while ago, I wouldn't bother.

It is seemingly compatible with all Steam games. Some have profiles already setup by the developers, others have custom profiles setup by other players (which can be easily accessed before starting the game), those which have neither will allow you to treat it like an Xbox controller as default.

It has nice features, the track-pads feel good and have nice tactile feedback whilst i also really like the driving wheel style triggers on the handles. Overall though build quality feels a bit cheap in comparison to say, an Xbox controller.

I've found in general that an Xbox controller is superior for the majority of games, it's a better option for things like strategy games but I still found myself longing for a mouse and keyboard on these titles. I've also found compatibility with non Steam games to generally be poor, for example FIFA always recognises it as a Mouse and Keyboard which rendered it useless as a second controller.

Death's Head wrote:On a separate topic, what determines when you get Steam items? When playing DR3 I received a message saying I received new items during the first couple of chapters but received nothing further even when finishing the game.

By items do you mean the trading cards? My understanding is that they're randomly generated during play time but I believe each game only has a certain amount of card drops (the amount seems to depend on the total, potential to get 50% of the cards I think, the others have to be bought/traded).

The Steam controller is great if you're okay with spending 30 minutes or so at the start of a new game tweaking your controller profile to set it up in a sensible way. An Xbox controller is going to be better if you don't bother with that.

So I just figured out I can remote my PC on my iPad, and it's actually a better way to play civ 6 than doing so on my TV.

Yeah, thought they would pop up throughout games but they just seem to "drop" once, at least in the few games I've got them for.

That would be 50% of my normal gaming session time so I'll give that a miss then (for now). PS4 controller works brilliantly, games even pause if you are playing wirelessly and it runs out of charge.

Yeah, you get a few when you first play the game for a few hours then you will get a random booster now and again.

Think I might try the steam link as my PC is connected via ethernet and Netflix works fine in HD over the WiFi. Didn't realise it had Bluetooth so my dualshock 3 will work.

Does my GPU need certain chipset to support this? Like shadowstream or whatever its called.

Game are selling them for £16, I picked one up but unfortunately not found the connection particularly stable. No idea whether that's the Steam Link itself or my wireless connection, although I don't have issues with anything else and Xbox streaming worked fine back when I tried that so I suspect it may be the former.

There are so many patchy reviews. I could sell it if it doesn't work or get powerline adapters, but the obvious solution is to just fix up my HTPC with a half decent GPU that fits and play directly downstairs and spend similar money. When I did that, it worked very well and you have zero problems like this.

Or I can keep both PCs if I spend £20 on a replacement PSU (one died) . Cant you stream between steam clients now and that's the same technology?

I'd get it for £16 in game but it's out of stock nearby.

Are GPUs still stupidly massive these days?

Yeah reviews seem to be very hit and miss, I'm currently using it over a wireless connection so tempted to try power line adapaters to see if that provides any better performance (but again, heard mixed stuff, some people saying it made it worse!). You can stream from steam to another PC with steam installed yeah, not really got much experience with trying it but when I did it seemed to work just as well as this on the occasions I have tried it from a laptop.

The high end GPU's are pretty hefty but there are smaller cards out there like the GTX1050Ti which seems to be around the £140 card and apparently does a great job of 1080p/60FPS.

I have the link at it works really well. I have the controller too, I've noted it much but for games I have I've not spent much time playing to get it working well and you can chop and change in game. The menu for editing mappings is very nice and you can pull premade maps too so it isn't so bad.

Out of curiosity, how do you have your Link connected to the internet?

Yeah, it just sits there on my LAN but is off all the time unless I'm using it as the Steam Controller wakes it from sleep nicely.

I tried mine over wireless, might try connecting it to the router directly see how much of a difference it makes. Managed to play through Refunct last night without any real streaming issues but that's a very basic game graphically.

I tried wireless and it was a bit gooseberry fool, better if I set stream quality to fast instead of balanced it is ok ish but yeah cable is much better.

Is your desktop PC also connected to the router? Connecting my Steam Link directly to the router wouldn't be too awkward but to my PC would be a bit of a pain. Wonder if Powerlines are an option.

F1 2013, Dirt 3 and the original GRID are no longer available to buy on Steam, I guess due to licensing expiring or something.

Yeah it is, I have ethernet running from my living room to office and gigabit switches in place so I can cable anything I want to cable, I tried the laptop on Wireless and it worked OK when I turned the quality down of the stream. Would have been OK if I was on the 5GHZ wifi but I was just out of range so was on the 2.4ghz wifi which is slower.
