Anyone else buy a Steam Link and just threw it out the window? Using home plugs I just can't get it to connect to my network and over wi-fi it's literally unusable due to constant freezing.

I'll take to the internet again tomorrow and try to figure it all out but I've gotten nowhere tonight. Hoping Valve will let me return it easily enough.

If you've thrown it out of the window you may need a longer cable.

I have had it be unplayable due to a poor connection twice in five months, both within the initial week of having it (initial patches maybe?). The Steam Link is wired to the router but the PC isn't. How long have you had it?

Oddly got a steam link last weekend from game for cheap have been trying to get FIFA 17 working cannot get a controller to be recognised properly (it's thinks it's a keyboard/mouse) but the game runs well so performance isn't an issue (wired) connection.

Has anybody in here used virtualhere through steam is it worth £8.99?

The only game I have trouble with on my Steam Link is GTA V which simply doesn't work or doesn't recognise input if run via the link in Full screen mode. Works fine in Borderless Windowed mode though.

Only got it last night but again spent this morning trawling the internet for ideas, none of which have worked. Over a wireless connection I can use it for about 2 minutes (but no audio) before it all just freezes in place and just hangs until I kill the power. Over ethernet it just doesn't seem to connect to my network as the IP address is completely different and my PC can't be found. When I get home later I'm going to try and investigate if it's a problem with the homeplugs/wiring, rather than the Steam Link itself. Currently the Link is connected via ethernet to a homeplug in the living room. My PC is connected via ethernet to my router upstairs and the other homeplug is connected to a second ethernet port on the router. Once I manage to actually play some games on it, them I'll worry about the no audio issue.

Just don't want to waste too much time on it when I could be using this time to actually play games on the PC instead.

When I get a bit of time to play PC games at my desk I spend half the time organising my desk layout

Even the best homeplugs add latency and are prone to packet loss, so you might find that problem never fully goes away. I've found that, when I had one, the Steam Link couldn't consistently use the PC GPU's built-in encoding chip to stream out the video, and would often fall back on using the CPU. While that often resulted in higher picture quality, it would often stutter and freeze if the game was CPU-bound at any time (because the streaming encoder was contesting for cycles). I tried a lot of things to fix it, including SSHing into the Steam Link and editing some config files, but in the end, I just sent it back to Valve and bought an Nvidia Shield Android TV instead, which has been great. It didn't solve the homeplug issues, though, so for that I just ran a Cat6 cable through the wall, up to the attic, then down through the wall to the living room, where I have an ethernet switch that both the PC and Shield plug in to, which then connects to the internet through a homeplug to the router.

Games look and feel like they're running native on Shield now, and there's never a single stutter or freeze. It's perfect.

I have something that looks a bit like this to wheel my tower between the living room and the study when needed, as well as a spare power/hdmi lead and keyboard and mouse on a laptop tray ready at all times:

Don't think I could push one of those down the stairs. I could try but I'll invoice you for any damages.

Weld it to a cherry picker and move it in and out of any room in the house via the windows.

So I'm no closer to figuring out why my Steam Link freezes and crashes when I load up a game over WiFi but I do seem to have discovered that only one of four ethernet ports (the one I use for my PC) on my Virgin router is working. Which explains why I couldn't connect to the network at all via ethernet. Seems pretty ridiculous that I didn't notice it sooner. How are Valve with returning hardware? Do I have 14 days as I'm thinking I better start the returns process asap, think I've wasted enough time on this now.

You don't push it downstairs, the picture shows how you handle stairs :

Remove desktop
Sit on wheely device holding laptop and ride down the stairs

Trelliz just didn't include the 3rd picture.

Is your virgin hub in modem mode? When like that only one Ethernet port is working.
Though its built in Wi-Fi doesn't usually work in that mode I think, you attach a wireless router to the one working port.

I did wonder the same thing but on investigation I found it definitely wasn't in modem mode. Virgin are sending me a new router so I'll hang onto the Link for now and hope it works when I can properly plug it in across ethernet.

With the Scorpio coming with 12GB it got me wondering about memory and how much is enough (I know I know more is better but is there a point where it just doesn't help) and as PC's can have as much as you like what's considered a sane maximum?
I assume 24GB while a lot isn't considered ultra outrageous but has memory had any massive leaps in the last years?
