Optical drives are pretty much obsolete. A lot of the modern cases don't even have bays for them.

I just use a cheap external one which sits neatly on top of the rather sleek looking Fractal Node case

I mainly use it for ripping music in FLAC format.

Someone passed in a Sky Box in my shop, not even sure if you can sell on old Sky Boxes so rather than wasting my time PAT testing it just ripped it apart and the 500GB Seagate drive now rests in my PC. Moar space for porn :datass:

When Virgin replaced my TiVo box with a V6 I wanted to get multiroom - they told me that once the new box is active the old box will no longer work at all as the software licence expires. They wanted me to pay full whack for a second box installation. I think Sky boxes can be reused or can be used as Freeview/Freesat boxes but I'm not sure.

Aren't Virgin supposed to replace old Tivo boxes (Mines a Samsung one) with the new V6 for free? Better find out and get on the blower, even moar porn :toot:

I think you'll get one box at a time for free. With the second one just call up and say you have an older one and need a V6, dont even mention its multiroom if you can. When the tech comes he wont give a gooseberry fool, just tell him which box you want swapping.

The Samsung is in the tip now minus the hard drive, but thanks for the advice! I just think it's gooseberry fool that they just scuttle a perfectly good box, I'd only had it a year! Surely they could use those boxes to try and get some more multiroom subscriptions?

Anyone visited RPS today?

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/

Ha. Hahaha.

EDIT: I'm sure I'll get used to it but there's some really dodgy UX decisions here: The top bar is messy as all strawberry float, they've maintained the wraparound advertising (I assume, all I see is a grey space due to adblock) which pushes the right sidebar content way down out of the way, and there's the incredibly annoying and basically useless Article Randomiser as seen on every GamingNetwork site ever. It's a personal thing, but I also hate the new logo.

I liked RPS because it was a slightly off-kilter blog run by a vanguard of 1990's PC Gamer bods, an anathema to the style-over-content corporated games sites like Eurogamer and GamesRadar. It wasn't going to stay that way forever, but I'd hoped they'd have kept the tone longer.

EDIT 2: Holy gooseberry fool, it looks so much better with http://darkreader.org/ installed.

RPS wrote:The first was that there was lots we liked about the existing design. RPS is a blog and that means our homepage should be a chronological list of posts showing images and text with as little fuss as possible. That hasn’t changed, but we are now showing more posts on the homepage and giving those posts larger images and more space for the text to breathe.

Loading up the homepage I can see one article and the top of an image for a second. Theres also a huge block ef empty space, presumably where the obnoxious ad Im blocking would be placed. Scrolling down shows one story able to fit on screen at once, so well done youve made your site look like im viewing a facebook feed on mobile.

The amount of white space if you have an adblocker installed

I see they're still doing their subscription thing too :simper:

I love the fact that people stating this fact, that the white space when using adblock is insane, are labelled "dickheads" in the comments and told to subscribe to remove ads instead... strawberry float that. The subscription model was implemented when RPS was an independent entity struggling for funding. It then sold-out, and the corporation it sold-out to then sold-out, so they should at least now explain where that money is going. If it's going directly to the writers...excellent! No problem with that. More likely it's further lining the pockets of the huge faceless business that took over. strawberry float you very much, but no.

And every single time you open a new link on the site, you get a pop up telling you that you're using an Ad Blocker.

I genuinely detest this kind of lazy, simplistic response to complaints. What does it matter if something's free? How does that in any way negate legitimate concerns regarding changes to it?

Entitlement is a belief that one deserve certain privileges. Complaining that a site I enjoy has changed its layout for the worse has strawberry float all to do with that.
