What is 'inciting violence' in the context of video games? GTA V let you rob stores and mow down civilians, encouraged it in fact. Manhunt was about snuff tapes.

The wording of Valve's statement is so crushingly vague as to mean nothing.

Someone in the RPS comments summed up my feelings perfectly: if you profit from something, you endorse it. Valve just opened themselves up to a whole load of horrific endorsements.

EDIT:

So yeah. A good move. Obvs.

Hmm... Perhaps we could have a system and have people determine, or "judge" if you will if something incites hate. You know, kind of like we do now.

Again, I don't want to defend Valve as they've become a pretty shitty company pushing things like loot crates and just trying to make money, but I will defend freedom of speech.

Let's take that example Karl posted earlier with the Active Shooter game. I never played, it but in the image the BBC put on the store page it says you can play as both the shooter and SWAT. What if, and again I'm just making stuff up here, there was a level set in a mall and as the SWAT you had to deal with the shooter but there were other civilians with guns who tried to take down the shooter? Something like that might make people re-consider the whole a "good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun so everyone should have guns" argument.

Should a game like that still be banned?

On to the other point, you have to be trolling now. Are you seriously trying to use some "won't someone think of the children" bullshit to justify banning anime games? what a joke.

When it's targeting a specific demographic then it's a problem.

The issue I had with the earlier shenanigans was the arbitrary line being drawn, where gooseberry fool like The Witcher and Duke Nukem were untouched, but others were. I don't believe in blocking access to any content unless it is, in fact, illegal, but I do understand companies should be allowed to decide what the deal with. As long as they're clear and consistent.

Valve were not clear and consistent, so their choices were to double down and start pulling more things, leading into some pretty big name titles, or to lay off and let more things fly. I fully believe this is the correct choice.

This isn't about censoring games (yet) or banning anything - if some edgy prick wants to make a school shooting game or a game about killing minorities (like the game AIDS simulator brought up by jim sterling) then they have every right to do so but as with the school shooter game, this will lead to mainstream coverage of "steam selling (and therefore endorsing by inaction) racist/offensive games" which could lead to actual censorship and regulation because valve don't seem to understand that selling something is endorsing it, like in the real world.

I think it was also Jim Sterling that made the comparison to the EA Battlefront gambling issue. EA pushed it further and further until it blew up in their face and drew the attention of governments and legislation. And this Steam fiasco will go the same way, as Trelliz has described. If Steam don't moderate their store, eventually someone else will and that'll be worse for everyone.

Again, I don't want to defend valve, but the issue with games like that would be taken care of by them being illegal in most jurisdictions.

Met summed up my thoughts on the issue perfectly, the rules they had before were not applied evenly. Yes, some shitty games will now get through on Steam, but loads of these were already there anyways, like the school shooting one, which was probably removed due to public pressure rather than it breaking the actual rules.

Regardless of the legality it smacks of a complete lack of responsibility or integrity for the sake of just making more and more money through the 'le ironic' meme trading cards and emoticons a lot of the shite on steam has.

Similarly if the less-informed mainstream media get another sniff of valve tacitly endorsing more games like the school shooter one their "its not technically illegal" defence will hold little weight against publications which still see games as murder training simulators which are literally satan incarnate.

I'm fully against the blanket ban Valve implemented on pornographic content. That article states the NCOSE now opposes the new decision to moderate nothing as it gives free reign to a an increasing number of games that involve sexual exploitation.

Rightey wrote:Hmm... Perhaps we could have a system and have people determine, or "judge" if you will if something incites hate. You know, kind of like we do now.

Again, which people? The users? That's a useless metric to judge anything by as it's so open to gaming of the systems. Again look at Twitter.

I will defend freedom of speech.

An argument increasingly utilised by the extreme right. As, for some reason, this needs to be repeatedly pointed out: freedom of speech does not allow for freedom of consequence.

Also, as several people have pointed out, this isn't about censorship. You're introducing an irrelevant argument to buoy your reasonings.

Maybe. It would depend, strangely enough, on more than a high level breakdown like you one you just gave. What is the tone of the game? What are the game's narrative leanings? Is it a glorification of the situations it contains, as the school shooter game was, or was it more tactical experience like the SWAT games? CoD let you shoot up an airport but the tone behind the game was clear: this is wrong. It hasn't been banned.

Know how these subtle differences could be sussed out? Moderation.

Anyone played Assassin's Creed Origins and found the performance to be pretty woeful? I picked it up cheap last night and gave it a quick bash and really struggled to get consistent performance out of it! Even dropping the settings down to low was not enough to to get anything like a consistent 60FPS at 1080P.

Now my PC isn't exactly a spring chicken, I'm running an i5 4690k with a GTX 970, but it's coped with everything to date on medium to high settings fine so I can't believe that Origins is really pushing it that much more than everything else I've been playing? Also it looks terrible when dropped down to low, really poor texture resolution and the like - other games both look and play much better!

Am I really just out of date hardware wise, or is there something else going on?

I did hear around release it was pretty shitty on PC. I hear a lot of Unisoft games aren't very well optimized for PC's, but I could be wrong. Maybe some one with the game will know.

Yeah I know they've generally had a bit of a bad reputation for these things but this seems to be really on another level.

I'm not usually a huge performance snob or anything but it is pretty hard to enjoy the game at the moment!

So anyone get anything in the gog sale?

I'm considering getting Everspace in my never ending quest to find a modern game comparable to Freelancer.

I like Everspace, but it is nothing like Freelancer. It is very much an arcade shooter, and it can get a bit repetative, not tried the DLC mind, that is meant to make it a bit more varied

Son of a... :x

I didn't know anyone responded to me and I finally caved and bought it. Well I will try it out and see how it is.

Also, I need to spend $0.52 to get RIME for free on the gog sale. Any suggestions?

edit: Ok, I played Everspace a little bit, and I have to disagree Zartan, yes the type of game is slightly different then Freelancer, but by god, the controls alone make it feel so much like Freelancer. Far more than any of the X games, or No Man's Sky ever made me feel. I think I will enjoy this. :toot:

Managed to get Origins running fairly well now, but I've had to lock it to 30FPS otherwise it just seems to be all over the place. :fp:

Lovely looking game though.

If NVIDIA would get there's arses in gear and release some new GPUs I would be interested in upgrading, but it seems like we still have some waiting to do on that front!

What nVidia say and do can depend heavily on what AMD does. nVidia may say they wont release a new card for a while however AMD just need to release a new card that can challence the 1080 TI and I can guarantee there will be a paper launch in weeks with card within 3 months.

Are there even any games that a 1080TI won't easily run?

I mean at sensible resolutions, not like that insane 16K setup Linus made that ran Tomb Raider at 2fps.

1080P easily all however 4k it can depend on the game and the settings. Xplane and dcs could make it chug and I'm sure there asre more.
