Is this real life?
Well, this really is something special!
Installed last night and made a hash job at a very temporary setup until I decide where to mount the base units.
Went through the setup OK, and then had to wait for the SW to install. Tip - If your GFX card only has one HDMI port then you need to buy a Displayport to Mini displayport cable to allow you to connect your monitor and Headset at the same time (£750 doesn't afford you one in the box apparently)
Started setup, thought the instructions regarding base placement is a bit lacking if I am honest, but the rest was fairly simple.
Any eventually all installed, and Started the VR tutorial, and...wow...First thing I noticed was there is literally no lag whatsoever...at all. Its as if you are wearing a box on your head and you are peering out of a hole in the front. I cannot stress enough how accurate the Headset and hand tracking is. It lost it's tracking a couple of times but think that was due to my dodgy hashjob at placing the Base stations more than anything else. I also need to update firmware etc.
My second thought was that the Graphics were much better than I expected. When the VR tutorial started to get me to blow up balloons and then shoot them I was really impressed in how it all looked and moved.
I then realised I had no games to play so had to kick them all off to DL (poor planning on my part). I had brief goes on the following
The Gallery - Incredibly immersive and pretty to look at. A bit boring though for me.
Zombie Training - No really my thing, but actually made me jump back when a cartoon Zombie ran at me.
Space Pirate - Awesome...Looks great and basically makes you feel like a badass
Audioshield - Great idea, and could be fun but the beat seemed to be off for me. May be due to my setup
Elite - A weird one. looks incredible and a bit gooseberry fool at the same time. The sense of scale of your ship and your surroundings is astonishing. The cockpit looks amazing and when the light reflects off your windshield with a planet below you it looks fantastic. But the text is quite blurry, and looking at large objects in the distance seem to have a strange shimmer effect to them all. I was also quite drunk at this point so that prob didn't help.
The headset itself is a very cool piece of kit, but I do find it seems to press my glasses onto my nose which gets uncomfortable after a while. Will need to have a play about with all the straps to see if I can make it more comfy.
Bearing in mind I really had just stuck the basestations in non ideal locations, and plugged everything in with little to no care, it all worked very well most of the time.
I need to set it all up properly and have a play about with the settings etc, but my first thoughts are...wow! I really could see this being the future with a couple of HW revisions and good SW support.
Project cars Downloaded overnight, and going to have a look at what else is out there. Will also try out DCS for you Kezzer.
Before I knew it, it was 1am and I hadn't had dinner, so it certainly took me in!
Can't wait to get it all properly setup and give it all a proper go!
One last thought, I had this weird sensation after playing it. even though I had turned it all off and was cooking my food, I had to remind myself I was no longer playing in VR. Sounds odd. The only thing I can compare it too, is when you are playing a rhythm game for a long time, and even when you stop playing and just going about normal life you find yourself trying to match the beat. (maybe I'm just odd)
Where did you get your clamps from AD? I'm tempted to get something similar and fix to my curtain poles.
