Flight simulator. I bought it last year on Kezzer's advice I think. So will try and test it out over the weekend for you Kezzer.

It's sitting on my desk at the moment...5 and half hours to go!

I hadn't really though about how I can mount these sensors. Do they have to be high up near the ceiling? Can I temporary stick on a book shelf just to test out or will that give me iffy results?

I have surround sound speakers in the corners, I'm wondering if I can attach to them?

It talks you through it on setup, but the general thing is they need to be in opposing corners outside of the desired ply area, at least 6 foot up and angled downwards a bit. They come with mounting brackets, screws etc but I wanted to be able to move them around, so went with the poles and quick release grips.

I think you'll find its a gooseberry fool gimmick m8.

Got revive working last night (let's you run oculus stuff on the vive) which gave me lucky's tale for free! No idea how good it's supposed to be but it's a 3d platformer so I'm giving it a shot.

Is this real life?

Well, this really is something special! :D

Installed last night and made a hash job at a very temporary setup until I decide where to mount the base units.

Went through the setup OK, and then had to wait for the SW to install. Tip - If your GFX card only has one HDMI port then you need to buy a Displayport to Mini displayport cable to allow you to connect your monitor and Headset at the same time (£750 doesn't afford you one in the box apparently)

Started setup, thought the instructions regarding base placement is a bit lacking if I am honest, but the rest was fairly simple.

Any eventually all installed, and Started the VR tutorial, and...wow...First thing I noticed was there is literally no lag whatsoever...at all. Its as if you are wearing a box on your head and you are peering out of a hole in the front. I cannot stress enough how accurate the Headset and hand tracking is. It lost it's tracking a couple of times but think that was due to my dodgy hashjob at placing the Base stations more than anything else. I also need to update firmware etc.

My second thought was that the Graphics were much better than I expected. When the VR tutorial started to get me to blow up balloons and then shoot them I was really impressed in how it all looked and moved.

I then realised I had no games to play so had to kick them all off to DL (poor planning on my part). I had brief goes on the following

The Gallery - Incredibly immersive and pretty to look at. A bit boring though for me.
Zombie Training - No really my thing, but actually made me jump back when a cartoon Zombie ran at me.
Space Pirate - Awesome...Looks great and basically makes you feel like a badass
Audioshield - Great idea, and could be fun but the beat seemed to be off for me. May be due to my setup
Elite - A weird one. looks incredible and a bit gooseberry fool at the same time. The sense of scale of your ship and your surroundings is astonishing. The cockpit looks amazing and when the light reflects off your windshield with a planet below you it looks fantastic. But the text is quite blurry, and looking at large objects in the distance seem to have a strange shimmer effect to them all. I was also quite drunk at this point so that prob didn't help.

The headset itself is a very cool piece of kit, but I do find it seems to press my glasses onto my nose which gets uncomfortable after a while. Will need to have a play about with all the straps to see if I can make it more comfy.

Bearing in mind I really had just stuck the basestations in non ideal locations, and plugged everything in with little to no care, it all worked very well most of the time.

I need to set it all up properly and have a play about with the settings etc, but my first thoughts are...wow! I really could see this being the future with a couple of HW revisions and good SW support.

Project cars Downloaded overnight, and going to have a look at what else is out there. Will also try out DCS for you Kezzer.

Before I knew it, it was 1am and I hadn't had dinner, so it certainly took me in!

Can't wait to get it all properly setup and give it all a proper go!

One last thought, I had this weird sensation after playing it. even though I had turned it all off and was cooking my food, I had to remind myself I was no longer playing in VR. Sounds odd. The only thing I can compare it too, is when you are playing a rhythm game for a long time, and even when you stop playing and just going about normal life you find yourself trying to match the beat. (maybe I'm just odd)

Where did you get your clamps from AD? I'm tempted to get something similar and fix to my curtain poles.

Well that's probably my longest post I've ever made so you can see I am pretty enthused with it all.

That's what it's like though

I've got this monster pc, all the games under the sun and all I want to do is be on VR the whole time :datass:

Got dirt rally working in revive last night. It's odd, in VR I can run it at ultra settings and it's smooth while driving unless I move my head, then it goes really stuttery. Odd how it can do vr in one instance but not the head tracking. Needs some major tweaking bit I can see that being another racing game to play to death :datass:

any game recommendations? I've got Elite and Project Cars but not sure what else is out there.

Haven't played VR since the 90s, so seriousely excited!

Job Simulator and Rec Room. Conveniently, Rec Room is free. Interacting with other people in a virtual space is a wonderful, terrifying, and surreal experience. That the physicality of another person's presence can be conveyed so tangibly across the internet, even with quite basic cartoony graphics, is pretty mind blowing.

Hah, Albear we've got to try that! Dat VR podcast.

The clamps: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1
The extendable poles: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1

I only needed one pole in the end, so two have gone back as i only needed a smaller one for the other corner.

You can adjust the distance of the lenses from your face with the side knobs (where the side straps attach). Just pull them out a bit and turn them. That should give you more space. There's also two face gaskets supplied with the Vive, with one of them being thicker and giving more space at the sides for the temples of the glasses. Both options will decrease your FOV slightly.

Alternatively you could try not wearing your glasses. The lenses focus your eyes on the screen at a set distance so if your eyesight is good enough at that distance you won't need your glasses. Not sure what that distance is.

those with weaker presciptions for nearsightedness don't need their glasses

is the best I can find through Google.

What did you make of it? It's not the most exciting use of VR but I thought it was a pretty solid platformer.

I don't know if it will work with Revive but I see no reason why not but Bullet Train is free on the Oculus store and it's well worth picking up, only a short tech demo but really impressive and a lot of fun.

If you don't mind putting money down on the Oculus store I'd definitely recommend trying The Climb and Superhot, far and away my favourite two VR experiences so far - Superhot is fairly cheap and genuinely awesome although the Climb is silly money at the moment (although there's a bundle offer including both and 3 other games which is pretty good value)

Has anybody on here picked up Arizona Sunshine? I've bought it but not had the chance to give it a go yet, looks a lot more in depth than most of the other shooters we've had so far.

I havnt tried it yet, I can't stop playing project cars

I'd forgotten how good it is getting a new pc, running all of your old games and seeing it just breeze through things that made the old one wheeze. Just ran the trackmania nations benchmark with everything as high as it'd go and it ran at 248fps :datass: My last PC could only run it on medium at 25fps :dread:
