What was the price difference between the 1080 and 1080 Ti? Wouldn't have thought someone would go for the former at this point.

Amazingly, around $300 apparently:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=1080+ ... 69&bih=929 Ti: Average price $900

https://www.google.co.uk/search?safe=of ... AosGnCvyoY 1080: Average price $600

Went for a custom build from PCSpecialist, but moving to the Ti would have been an extra £180.

I'll watch the video later but I was subscribing to the idea that my last machine was a beast when I bought it and (Apart from two graphics card upgrades) it lasted me nearly a decade. Doubtful this will last that long, but it should see me through for quite a while.

Pretty excited to get it. Though I forgot I'm away in Edinburgh Friday/Saturday night so if it comes on Friday I'll need to wait till Sunday to play with it. :fp:

Luckily I'm off Monday so that'll be well spent. :D

My 11GB 1080Ti was £749 last year.
Same card is £899.99 now :dread:

According to Amazon that's with £266 off the RRP

Maybe next year. It's definitely on the list though.

I'm still rocking an AMD Athlon X2 4200+ on one of my systems (TV). I should think about overclocking it as the temps are only 37 degrees.

I don't see myself splashing out on hardware for quite a while. My other machine is an i3 which works perfectly fine, could drop maybe £100 on a new GPU but even that feels really expensive these days - I remember when a mid tier card could be had for £70.

And give up Mario Maker?!

I am a big advocate for VR though. PSVR has blown me away with what it can do and that's on the weakest of the three "big" VR systems. I'm expecting Vive to be a good few levels above that in terms of fidelity, controls and tracking so it's high on my list (Maybe the top of it). Unfortunately it's expensive as hell and I'm not sure I can justify it until next year at the earliest. I'll keep an eye on it though and as soon as I've got a good moment to jump in on it I'll be there.

Everyone buy "They are Billions".

It's immense. Think I've put about 150 hours in to it so far. If you are a fan of old school RTS's then it's a must.

Still hanging in there with my 4790k and GTX 970, can't see any point of upgrading yet and not for a long time tbh.

I joined that race right away in 2005, £330 was an insane amount of money at the time for a GPU (stock Radeon X1800XT 512MB) and I've never gone back to that. Just pick up whatever was mid-high/top-end last generation or the gen before that from eBay, would be perfectly happy popping into CEX to pick up something reasonable given the price GPUs that will last more than 2 years or so go for these days. I'd much rather pick up a complete system like PS4 or Switch for that kind of money. You also have new GPUs that are just rebadged dies with one or more cores re-activated or core/mem overclocks and massive coolers, things you can achieve yourself, even with stock cooling.

I built a new PC for other stuff and that i3 was only "needed" for gaming (and it would have been stupid investment to by anything lower end) because physics were really starting to hit the system hard - something like Battlefield Bad Company 2 was unplayable at LAN, something like 5-10fps on low settings. Otherwise you can easily compensate with lower LODs, draw distance, less particle effects and such. AA and SSAO weren't exactly essential things. There's no other explanation why I can get by with 512, 1, 2GB of VRAM in plenty of games. I don't think many people try to see what happens when you run on lower hardware.

The wonderful thing about PC gaming is it is so scalable and even if your hardware is ancient there are always new games coming out that you can play - even if your underspec'd according to the sky high "minimum" requirements that are just sponsored by AMD/NVIDIA anyway.

People seem perfectly happy with 20-30FPS on most console titles anyway. If I want smooth graphics I'll play GameCube games when performance actually mattered to developers and consumers rather than whiz-bang. And I can still play Quake III at an unlocked 666fps.

I wouldn't say people are happy with low frame rates to be honest. It just gets put up with.

Yeah, which sucks. But what can you do.

(Don't buy those games. Games like Zelda BOTW :shifty:)
