It really boggles the mind that people still buy it as a format, it's what 20 years old now? Mind you, I bet even if people had bluray they'd call it DVD :dread:

Then why do chavs prioritise a massive tv and an L shaped sofa over everything then. Show me one chav house on tv that does have a 300" tv above the fireplace. Thing is, they're so thick that because the tv is 'HD' that they probably think that's all that's needed, not to feed it an HD signal.

I mainly buy TV boxsets on DVD because they're cheaper, for movies i normally buy blu ray.

Pretty sure they didn't, though a couple of years later they did release a 2 disc special edition (which included a disc called The Matrix Revisited, which was first released as a standalone disc even though it was nothing more than an extras disc) as a means of replacing it.

During the last few years of VHS, the quality of the tapes actually went downhill. I would watch older releases on my CRT and the picture would be really good, but once DVD came along, it was as if they purposely made the picture quality worse as newer releases would be nowhere near as clear.

I also had the extended edition, but again, it was just the 1 tape (though it was my last LOTR VHS purchase because the widescreen aspect ratio was all weird and stretched on my then TV). Found a pic of said tapes and you can see that it was just the 1. I never encountered any LOTR VHS which was on 2 tapes (i can only assume the 2 tape release was not in the UK).

DVDs still exist because not every film needs to be viewed in 4k to be appreciated. Action, sci fi, big musicals, summer blockbusters - you get them in the best quality you can, but what is the point in paying an extra fiver to watch Philomena in 1080p?

I was going to buy an L shaped sofa until I actually sat on them in DFS...that corner bit is a dead zone, it's so uncomfortable.

HMV have been selling these VHS collections for a while, I've been tempted a couple of times to pick up Airplane and Ferris Bueller's Day Off as I don't actually own them.

Also while Blu Ray/HD is preferable DVD is still perfectly fine to watch, I own plenty of them.

I approve of this. I got into DVD quite late (2000 or so) but, like some songs being better on vinyl, some movies or better on VHS. Ghostbusters, for example. Ghostbusters 2 looks way too squeaky clean in how its filmed and directed, which is partly why it lacks the charm of the first, and the original similarly just looks weird on nice, crisp, cleaned up DVD and HD. I still have a VHS of Ghostbusters released after the DVD version, where they've put all the special features at the end of the reel.

If it was up to me, these VHS-DVDs would have a fake screen filter to make them look VHS.

I'd rather have a Betamax collection, the connoisseurs choice of video format.

You can get a DVD player for $25 here. Blu-Ray players still cost at least two-three times that.

Crazy that it could fit on one VHS but the extended edition stretches across two blurays :lol:

This is a big factor. The PS2 was my first DVD player and so the cost of entry to DVD was offset as I was getting the console anyway, but as I've not been interested in any consoles that have included a blu ray capability* then the only way of getting on to that ladder is by buying a dedicated player and those are still quite expensive (relatively speaking).

Combine that with the fact that each blu ray is a good 20%+ more expensive than the respective DVD release, and that more often than not I just stream or purchase digitally any films I want to watch these days then I just don't see the point in buying in to the blu ray format.

*and from what I hear the consoles aren't exactly the best way of watching them anyway?

I find in just a bit too fake that they're not including a real VHS copy of the film. I guess this is just another one of those vinyl style DVD sets they released last year. Had they actually included a VHS I would have been more tempted to buy some.

If you're worried about the picture quality of your blu ray player then you really shouldn't be streaming
