Some new research reported on actually reliable sources suggests artificial sweeteners are bad, but mentions saccharin as being the worst:

It seems they alter the bacteria in your gut. It also includes human trials.

No it doesn't. Your lack of exercise is doing that for you.

The brunt of the study seems to be that diet sodas may not decrease your blood sugar levels compared with full-sugar sodas. That's important if you have diabetes, but has only passing relevance to your weight.

If you are calorie-counting, diet sodas are still better than normal sodas. If you are diabetic, diet sodas are still probably better than normal sodas, unless (as this study suggests) you have a certain breed of gut fauna that can negate the positive effects switching to artificial sweeteners usually has on blood sugar levels.

There is in any case a good argument to be made that if you're overly concerned about your health you should probably just stick to water (and maybe unsweetened tea). Diet soda certainly isn't "good" for you - just, in some ways, less bad.

There's that and all the hysterical stuff about aspartame causing cancer etc etc.

I'm always prepared to be challenged as I kicked Coke for Diet Coke and always wondered if that was okay, but thats a study involving only seven people. :|

There never seems to be any ACTUAL evidence of anything, even those who say 'well obviously its not great for you' - wheres the evidence even of that, never mind that arsparteme causes cancer etc..etc.. I'm willing to see it, but it doesn't seem to exist on any credible level?

The only thing to worry about with sugar free drinks is potential tooth damage as they're usually fairly acidic.

Why not test it, Cal? Drink Pepsi Max all through October, eat and exercise your regular amount, and track how much weight you lose or gain. Then in November, try and eat and exercise the same but cut the Pepsi Max and see what happens.

Not really, your blood sugar level is very important to weight loss.

Sparkling water, it's an aquired taste for many, but one worth acquiring!

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Pepsi Max probably won't make you fat - sugar and excessive carbs make you fat, neither of which Pepsi Mac has much of - but it's still contains about 6,200 ingredients pretty much all of which are probably terrible for your body.

That said, I drink soft drinks but take the view that, if you don't consider drinking a soft drink - diet or 'fat' - a treat, you're doing it wrong.

BUT WHERES THE EVIDENCE?

Everyone has the view, everyone says it, but no-one has any evidence whatsoever. It verges on being an urban myth.

Urban myth is probably about right. While I doubt that Pepsi Max (or any drinks from Pepsi or Coke!) are good for you, a lot of the fears around diet drinks comes from it having aspartame as an ingredient. There has been a hoax email going around since the 90s telling people that aspartame is terrible and is going to kill you, but very little evidence that it is actually harmful. Or at least any more harmful than any other chemical ingredients used in drinks.

Moggy, I'm not talking about sweeteners, I'm talking about all the other ingredients; colourings, preservatives etc.

While I agree with DML that I don't have any evidence, I'm taking an empirical approach to a degree. Personally, I subscribe to the caveman diet approach, whereby, in short, processed food and drink is the enemy.

Yeah that's why I didn't reply directly to you Jam. I doubt there is much good stuff in Pepsi, although I don't think it is as evil as it's made out to be.

The caveman diet would be great but we ran out of mammoths.

Haha. strawberry floating cavemen. They only lived to about 25 and they didn't have Pepsi Max. From that, I think we can safely conclude that drinking Pepsi Max makes you live longer. :datass:

I buy the argument about E-numbers, I can understand that angle to a certain extent.

Thing is, I don't get why there is outrage about diet fizzy drinks and not over say margerine which is essentially a 'diet' product as well. Personally I don't see a huge difference, they both replace a product with one with less nutrients but less calories.

I do drink quite a lot of fizzy water as well. I need a bit of 'fizz' in my drinks, I get bored if all I had was orange juice and water. I gave up squash ages ago and I'm not a big drinker. I have some almost alcholic mates lecture me before on diet drinks, which I think is a bit rich.

Big drinkers. :dread: Smoke weed instead. 8-)

To be honest, I think margarine is total shite. A pointless product. Tastes absolute wank compared to butter and it is processed as well, so theoretically much worse for you. I think people obsess over calories too much. Besides, how much butter/margarine do you use in any given meal?!?

The same applies to oil. Olive oil is gorgeous and so good for you. I despair when I see bellends like Vernon Kay advertising oil alternatives as a health product.
