Dear Forum,

Everyone tells me my sad addiction to Pepsi Max will not help me lose weight. I'm not hugely overweight, at 15st, but as a New Year Resolution I just want to lose a stone and half over the course of this year. According to everyone and his dog, somehow - and nobody seems to able to tell me the 'how' of it - fizzy drinks, even sugar-free fizzy drinks like Pepsi Max, are weight-gaining.

Huh?

Let me be clear: these are the listed ingredients on the side of a 250ml can of (sugar free) Pepsi Max:

Energy: 1.8kj (0.4kcal)
Protein 0.1g
Carbohydrate: 0.1g (of which Sugars: Trace)
Fibre: Trace
Sodium Salt: Nil

How does any of that equate to weight gain?

It won't make you fat. It also won't be doing you any favours in general though.

Pepsi Max will make you fat because it tastes so god awful you'll go and drink three times as much of a decent sugary drink.

Aspartame found in the sugar free drinks that blubberbuts drink can cause unstable blood sugar, causing you to crave carbs and retain water.

Pepsi Max is fine to drink it wont make you fat there is strawberry float all in it.

aaaaand it taste daaaamn good.

people say it will make you fat as despite their mass advertising about having no sugar no bugger believes them

It'll neither help nor hinder. The benefits of water over it are pretty negligible, but it might help to have a general healthier overall lifestyle... cutting out artificial sweeteners might make the real thing more satisfying thus you eat less sugar overall. Maybe.

Drinking Pepsi Max (or any diet drink) in itself won't make you fat. The research suggests that drinking diet drinks makes you crave other foodstuffs packed with sugary goodness. Fat people can't handle these cravings, stuff their face, and make the diet drink of no benefit to them.

Therefore, as long as you don't start scoffing crap food regularly, it's ok to drink it. Not brilliant for your teeth mind, but them's the breaks. It's my only vice too, and I'm still in decent shape.

I used to be addicted to this stuff (maybe 4 or 5 cans a day) but I've managed to wean myself off it and on to sparkling Buxton mineral water (similar quantities) which gives me that lovely clean mouth feeling followed by a refreshed "aahhh" and watering eyes.

Got a can of Pepsi Max on the go now though but it's an occasional treat.

I've never understood this either (just replace Pepsi Max with Diet Coke for me).

I think it's mostly bull, apart from the various chemical solutions given in the thread. So yeah, drink diet, but don't think that enables you chocolate.

Theres obviously been some kind of new research debunking the aspartme thing as all the Government 'Live Longer' campaign things now actively reccomened switching from full fat drinks to diet drinks. They'd never have done that before.

Afaik my dad who's a professor claims there was never a single scientific study to back up aspartame being bad but since science tries to prove itself wrong I suppose somebody went with that hypothesis and it turned out to indeed be bullshit.
