The game can be pre-ordered for £33.26 on PS4 or XBO from The Game Collection. Use voucher code "GOLDENBOOT" (valid until 23:59 on Saturday 20 August).

Or... £34.85 at ShopTo; reduced to £32.36 if you're a Gold member.

For absolutely no good reason, I barely played the last version. I think I burnt out on the game with the 2012 to 2015 versions and I was thinking of giving it a miss this time around. I'll see if the Demo changes my view.

You left the party just as it was getting good.

2012 and 2013 were clunky and robotic.

2014 was much more realistic and organic, except all players felt like Sunday League players.

2015 combined the best elements of the previous two.

2016 was close to perfection, my only complaint was it being a bit too pacey and too easy to do pinball passing.

2017 seems like it has a much more realistic pace this time, they seem to be firmly going down the sim route here.

Managed to have a couple of games

Referees are a lot less lenient now, unlike last year where, providing play doesn't stop, they would ignore fouls they now come back to hand out bookings. Finding myself having more free kicks too.

Keepers are MUCH better, so much so that my first two games were goaless draws. Shooting feels pretty much the same as last but, but the keepers are much more responsive and agile than last year. In one instant the keeper parried and shot then seemed to slide in front of me to block the rebound, very aggressive.

Been playing it this morning:

Goalkeepers and referees as Nick says are WAY better. A huge improvement.

Player likeness is great like always, and PES always has those little touches that make you smile. One thing it does great are volleys, SO satisfying.

It's the movement that kills it for me though. It still just feels so rigid. It's like you're waiting for animations to finish before the players get on and pass/shoot. It's hard to explain, it just feels less free than FIFA, though I appreciate that PES fans probably feel the same about FIFA and if I put the time and effort in to really get used to it I might accept it. I just don't want to spend hours trying to adjust to something that feels worse.

Dribbling I'm not feeling either, the players ice skate around a lot and the ball feels like it's attached to the player rather than being a separate entity when using players like Messi. But again, if I spent 20 hours playing it I might adjust to it.

They need to improve the online though imo, I rarely play the AI. PES online is the one area that is still miles behind FIFA. Love or loathe things like Ultimate Team but it kicks the crap out of PES's online offerings.

The online in 2016 was decent. Divisions was good fun (if a little tiring constantly playing Real Madrid) and from what little I played of MyClub it seemed to basically be the same as Ultimate Team. They also did regular tournaments too. Granted I haven't played FIFA much since 2014 but there didn't seem to be much difference between the offerings in my mind.

I've always liked this about PES.

Some people call it lag, I call it momentum. Sprint in a straight line and try to stop, your intertia carries you, you have no control of your legs they just keep going. There's a lot of integrity in PES's constraints, you can only do certain movements when your body is doing a certain thing.

FIFA, up until, 16 completely disregarded this almost allowing you to do a full 90 degree turn while sprinting and resulted in me feeling totally disconnected from the game.

From my experience MyClub went down the pan when they opened it up to be F2P, the lag and delays in the menus let alone games was awful. Before that it wasn't much better, not to mention the fact it took so long AGAIN to get the squads updated.

FIFA also has a much better divisions method where it matches you to people of similar quality teams. If you pick Real Madrid you'll play teams like Barcelona and Bayern Munich. If you pick West Ham you'll play teams like Ajax or Celtic, for example. It's not faultless by any means but it's better.

I've just always found FIFA online to be a league above PES, but again, PES has a lot going for it given the improvements the have made in the last few years.

That looks great!

I was gonna hold off from picking up PES this year but my defences are falling. Although I want to hang on until the price drops a bit.

Yeah... I closed it. I don't think the PSN communities work that well; the PES one and the Fallout one had very little posting so I decided that it'd probably be best to just use the main GRcade one. Even that is quiet, but at least it gets a wee bit of action!

I finally got around to playing the demo.

+ Player likenesses and animations are superb
+ Gameplay is very slick; it feels really cohesive and realistic
+ Masses of team setup options for folk who like that kinda thing...
- ...but how do I just change my line-up from, say, 4-3-2-1 to 4-4-2? It's not obvious!

In my mind I had almost decided to give PES a miss this year. I didn't play much of the previous version because, even though it's brilliant, it felt almost like a "pressure"; I used to get so into the online matches that I'd get some sort of tension in my back and neck, and start getting sweaty :fp: :fp: :fp: .

But... playing the demo reminded me how good the game can be. I was (am) really rusty but, when I finally worked through to a 1-0 victory in my third match, it felt so good. And, for me, that's the draw of PES and how it reflects real football. It can annoy and frustrate but, in those moments when you hold out for a hard-fought draw or you break forward and score that last-gasp winner, it's beautiful.
