That’s how they get you man, one or two novelty pickups and bang, before you know it you’ve spent all your free weekends in nerd shops with smelly men who’re significantly better at the game than you.

I love it. It’s so pretty. The only problem is my tournament sleeve of choice are bright pink (this avoids my makeup marking the sleeves, which is grounds for a disqualification under cheating rules) which clashes rather horrendously with it.

Mimikyu is goddamn adorable and the ultimate proof that new designs can be just as good as any of the old ones, nostalgia be damned

I even have a Mimikyu plush toy

Why would make up on your sleeve get your disqualified? I mean you're getting no advantage out of that.

Any markings on sleeves get you disqualified. You aren't meant to know what card is coming next in your deck, any marking on a sleeve can be a sign of cheating, so you have to be careful with your sleeves not to have anything on them that can be deemed as such. It's a rule in all competitive card games. (Old yugioh and Pokemon player here, albeit not a very good one)

I know, but it's probably best i don't get back into it though as i was utterly obsessed with it first time around. Still have all my albums in a box, along with a bunch of other related items such as the original boxes they sold booster packs in (i would ask in the shops at the time if they had any empties as i liked to keep my doubles in them). I also have a big album full of japanese cards from the early years, one of the last i added to the collection was free with an issue of corocoro comics and was called a 'shining mew'

Dude!!! Me too! Gen 7 was awesome and definitely has the strongest designs of any recent game in my books. I never liked Megas that much and gen 5 is... not really inspiring at all.

Foil cards warp in most humid/warm places when not stored properly! These ones in particular are susceptible to it. I have a playset of 4 properly kept but the actual card is given away free at League events, so I’m not overly precious about it.

Exactly right. In Pokemon you put six cards from your deck to the side at the start of the game, so markings telling you (potentially) where and what those cards are would be a huge advantage over your opponent. Or say for example I have an ability that lets me draw a card once per turn. If I knew what that card is, I’d either be able to use that ability when it was going to be particularly advantageous or find an excuse to shuffle my deck to reset it and hope I had a better free card next time. Unscrupulous players would have a hugeand unfair advantage here so despite the markings being normal wear and tear the reasonable thing for a judge to do would be to intervene and either get you to resleeve the deck or hand some game loss or other penalty to your opponent to balance the field. I would never do this, and I’ve never been stopped when using the problem sleeves, but the marks are unique and could be said to form a cheater’s profile, so the safer thing to do is avoid the problem entirely rather than hope nobody notices and then claim ingnorance.

If I remember correctly this shining mew could be worth some serious dollar, assuming you’ve kept it in good condition. The nostalgia market for Pokemon is insane and might be worth a look if you wanted to make a few pounds on the side.

I've kept it in one of those special little plastic card sleeves ever since i got it, so it's still mint.

Same goes for pretty much my entire Pokemon card collection actually, i never did complete a single set, but i got a lot of the main ones from the early themes (Base, Fossil, Jungle, Rocket, Gym Leaders, Neo etc).

The last UK cards i collected were Neo Genesis, while the last Japanese cards i had were from the 'Neo 4' set.

I’m almost tempted to ask if you’d be willing to part ways with any of it lol. Old school cards are unbeatable for their nostalgia value. We seem to have lost my good folder of them at my parents house which is a real shame.

I still have a crap load of gen1 cards that are all flat and currently wrapped in cling film and card.. is it worth digging them out for you? They're pretty much all from around 1999. A few handfuls worth.

(When I say dig out, I mean across the room from me behind my N64 games on a shelf.)

Nah, i've had numerous clear outs over the years and every time the folders have stayed put.

Might be worth me making a video of them at some point though as then you'll be able to have a closer look.

I don't get the appeal of trading card games, I've played the PC version of Magic: the Gathering and Hearthstone but neither held my attention for more than a few hours, I had a few games against other players and got utterly destroyed every single time and ended just going "strawberry float this" and never bothered playing either again.

I learned to play the Pokemon card game by playing the Game Boy Color game.

It's been so long since then though that i wouldn't have a clue how to play nowadays.

Potentially? I mean, I'm not exactly in the market for old formats... but it would be nice to build some of the Base-Fossil stuff for fun... which is basically just low value stuff (Hitmonchan, Electabuzz, Scyther, trainer cards). I'm not a collector of that stuff by any measure though.

It's a social thing as much as anything else. I don't like the internet ones anywhere near as much, but they're useful in a general sense for practice and getting to understand the game overall.

Hyperion wrote:Played Magic about 20 years ago. Have some rare cards as well that are now my pension :datass:

If you do it might be worth getting them PSA graded. Costs about £20 per card, but means you get them authenticated and preserved in a manner which makes the value absolutely skyrocket to the hardcore collectors. For example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magic-the-Ga ... Swlila3i6I

Yeah... you've got a bit of a grounding because a lot of the core concepts (energy, evolution, unlimited abilities, one attack per turn) are the same but there are a bunch of other things which are totally different. And it's a huge money sink, and there's a far more established competitive circuit these days.

Next time I go home (might not be until Christmas...) I will get my old Pokemon cards and mail them to you. I had tonnes and I'm sure they're still around somewhere.

Next time I'm home I'll go through all my pokemon cards too and send you only the most worthless and least competitively viable cards
