Apparently Photobucket and Tinypic replaced some of the pictures with naughty stuff, because they recycle their URLs.
That can't be the real reason, otherwise you might as well just close all threads that may contain pictures and also ban people posting pictures at all in case the links later change.

The thread was going to be closed anyway, but before that happened it was noticed that there was a lot of probably illegal content now in the earlier pages. Rather than go back and remove it all to archive the thread it was just removed. Fair dos.

Some of the old pic URLs got recycled by their image hosts and were displaying some rather unsavoury content. If it had been a smaller thread then the offending pictures could have been pruned out but with it being 19,000,000 pages (approx) it was decided it was best to just nuke the entire thread from orbit. It was the only way to be sure.

Yea, can confirm that there's nothing more sinister here than seeing that the first hundred pages or so are now riddled with reassigned content and so, even if the content wasn't dodgy (which it was), the thread was nonsensical as people responded to pictures that weren't there anymore and had been replaced with random stock imaged and jailbait.
