It's not really backfiring if they've got people spreading it further round the internet for free.

I know that it's drawn particular ire for casting a non-Asian as the lead. Which is a bit silly as the Major appears quite ethnic-neutral in the original.

Isn't she 99% cyborg with the only human bit being the brain?
If so she can be any sex or race.

From what I've seen online some Japanese seem to believe that casting a white person makes it look more like an anime because anime character design is typically lacking in clear ethnicity.
It's only really westerners who have a problem with it.

I struggle to think of many anime characters who actually look Japanese.
Most anime characters tend to look far more white than asian.

Even if you can argue the character is more "neutral" looking in the anime (despite her name being Motoko Kusanagi), East Asian actors being looked over completely is still whitewashing, or whatever you want to call it.

It's like if a film's script had the characters all written as gender neutral or without an ethnicity in mind and all the roles still going to Caucasian actors regardless.

Let's face it though. Without an established big name like Scarlett Johansson attached the project never would've gotten off the ground in the first place.

Personally I think it's a bit lame to just accept it as a shitty thing that apparently has to happen.

If the film was being made in a predominantly whote country. And the amount of minority actors reflected the population of that country I dont think it could be considered white washing.

Similarly if a Japanese studio remade a western film and used all Japanese actors (or dubbed a western film with all Japanese actors) I don't see what would be wrong with that.
