You know I don't think, even if it was for the civil war, seeing a pair of googly eyes on a statue would make me think "Ah yeah, the guy who did this definitely wants this statue to be removed".

Googly eyes. And just because that person was involved in the revolutionary war, doesn't necessarily preclude them from having been involved in the slave trade.

I don't think it's even anything that deep, probably just some bored kids who thought it'd be funny to stick googly eyes on a statue.
