I don't consider making a stand for what you believe in childish.
Not that they are the most important people here but late cancellations happen all the time, the producers will always have backup topics and clips which they can insert.
It could've been a major problem for McGregor too; it'll be written in his contact that he has to do these media appearances so risked retribution from the studio, or at least could cause future employers to look twice. Obviously because of the way it's blown up that probably won't be the case but it would have been a possiblity.
