Planes are meant to be safer because they crash less than cars, but when they do crash... there were 163 people on board, ffs.

Terrible news but try not to let it put anyone off flying. There must be tens of thousands of flights every day and serious accidents don't happen too often.

Flying is a bit of piss. The only time I've been remotely anxious was when I was flying in a 6 seater through a tropical storm in Florida. Lightening was going on all over the shop. Definitely bicycle clip time.

Flying is one of my favourite experiences in the world, if I can get a window seat. Landing in Dubai at night was one of the most spectacular views I have ever set my eyes upon.

Tragic news.

I'm a bit nervous about flying, but once the plane's up in air, I've usually calmed down. As MCN & Mini E have said, the views can be awesome.

No Peter, that's just you

I think the odds for being killed by a horse are greater than being killed in a plane. Am interested to find out what caused this crash! Its unusual for a pilot to swerve so severely, considering the news reports saying that it was all started by a flaming engine.

A donkey too, but as Ricky Gervais says:

"Think of all the checks you have when you go on a plane; going through security, engineers checking it every time to see if it's in working order, passports etc. Then what do you have for the donkey risde? 'Have you shut the gate? Is he on the donkey? Good' ".

One flaming engine shouldn't cause the plane to go down though. That's the puzzling thing. Internal extinguishers should put the fire out and in theory they can take off with one engine out.
Obviously didn't quite happen like that in this case...

The MD-80 has a terrible safety record, though. It's a wonder it's still allowed to fly. Should be permanently grounded, IMO.

Maybe after the engine caught fire, instead of taking off the pilot decided to beach it instead of taking off (bare in mind there's no room to slow down when nearing the end of the runway).

Sounds horrible.

Two civil guards told El Pais newspaper: "It doesn't look anything like a plane - it's horrific - everything is burnt.

"It's the closest to hell that I've seen. The bodies were boiling hot, we burnt ourselves collecting them."

I'd imagine the engine fire caused a thrust imbalance at a critical time, causing the aircraft to veer, and a wing to dip.

Is that the type of plane that just crashed? Thier was a crash expert on a while ago saying it had a pretty average record.

Since launch in 1989, there have been 56 incidents, including 23 hull-loss incidents, and 1,023 fatalities.
