I didn't realise quite how serious this was until I read a couple of weeks ago that 90% of the plastic in the ocean comes from just six countries in Asia. IIRC the worst offenders in East Asia were China, Vietnam and Thailand - with India being the worst by a long way in South Asia

But before we feel too guilt free it's worth remembering that we ship much of our plastic of to China for disposal, so it's possible a portion of China is kind of us

Pretty much this.

Also, the upcoming 'ban' on plastic drinking straws will have a negative impact on many disabled people, including myself who cannot physically drink without them, the paper ones don't bend like the plastic kind do which makes it difficult for people who have limited movement and the metal ones pose potential hazards when used in hot drinks as metal conducts heat - Plus they aren't very hygienic when used repeatedly as I can imagine people not properly cleaning them between uses.

I'm seriously considering stockpiling straws

I drink bottled water when i'm out somewhere because i have no choice (especially in summer), but i do try and make sure to recycle my plastic as and when i can. I do feel though that lately the media has become a little obsessed with lecturing us about it, especially in regards to ocean pollution even though the vast majority of it (as preezy said) doesn't even come from this country.

Of course, the govt will pay lip service by banning straws and the like, but i don't see the point in these bans when the items in question can be easily put out for recycling after use anyways.

Like someone else said, i too have a cupboard literally full of plastic bags due to the fact I'm a forgetful sod. I haven't counted them though. Even worse, I have two canvas bags I could take to the shop instead, I just can't for the life of me remember to put them in my bag or have the foresight to put them in my bag for when I go shopping.

I do try to recycle whenever I get chance though. The problem is, there's no recycling collections by me whatsoever, so I save it all up and pass it onto my daughter's grandparents who take it to be recycled for me. I'd do it myself but I can't drive.

Just a note for those who do this, make sure you have a dedicated meat bag, or wash your bags regularly as there have been cases of people dying from bacteria because they put fruits and veg in bags that had previously had meat in them.

I recycle. It's pretty easy to do here as we just have a general mixed recycling bin where you can throw paper, plastic, glass etc. All in together. We also reuse the plastic shopping bags we get but we could probably do more.

It's also advised not to keep reusing water bottles as they too can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Also remember not to wash your fleece or polyester clothes in the washing machine, because they're a leading cause of microplastics ending up in the ocean

If you really have to machine wash them, you should wash them inside a plastic bag (for irony's sake if nothing else)

disposable bottles of water are one of the biggest sources of one-use plastic. theyre completely pointless and a waste of resources.

I stopped using bottled water and now have a reusable one and also recycle pretty much all I can but I feel kind of limited in what I can actually do. Every time I go to the supermarket everything is covered in the stuff. Really this is going to requite a lot of regulation and government strong arming to improve things.

Except that's not really true at all. Its completely possible to reuse all the plastic in a disposable water bottle and I make sure I always recycle them.

That being the case, I far prefer the water in those bottles to the stuff coming out of my tap, so it's not actually pointless as far as I'm concerned and it shouldn't have to be a waste of resource either.

It's the carrying around of the bottles that gets me. People have been so inured to the idea that you have to be constantly hydrated, they get into a panic attack if they don't have their little plastic bottle of water with them at all times.
