Yoshimi... dang, man, that looks hot! I love the style of it so far; there is some great potential there. Good work!

Ah! I'm keen to hear your thoughts about the console and the games, Orange. It looks to be such a quirky system!

Estimated another 1-2 weeks for delivery, but yeah I am excited!

I've also been spending lots of time working on a 2D zelda-like for it which is going pretty well!

Sort of! Here is a GRcade exclusive sneak peek:

It'll be possible to play it in browser or on PC using the playdate simulator (albeit with a little bit of effort) so I'll make sure to let you know how when it's done :toot:

In a complete twist of fate - my console just arrived! Tracking was estimating 5-7 September this morning so it has completely surprised me. What a great start to the bank holiday weekend!

I can't take pictures because my phone camera is bust, but the box is lovely, the console is tiny, the screen is beautifully crisp and the crank feels great!

EDIT: Tried out the first 2 games (they come at 2 a week from first boot).

Whitewater Wipeout isn't really my thing but it's a good intro to controlling a game with the crank. Casual Birder is much more what I'm into as a quirky lighthearted adventure game and I like the gimmick of using the crank to focus the camera when taking photos of birds!

EDIT 2: Just loaded up the latest build of Resonant Tale on my device too. Feels good

... :o ... :toot: . Resonant Tale is unleashed! And here in GR as a WORLD EXCLUSIVE! It looks fantastic; the graphical style and small object size/tile map reminds me of my C64 (BASIC) coding days! I'm really looking forward to seeing more and, if I can play it via my old iMac, I will!

... :o . That's ace, Orange! It's a shame that you are unable to take any snaps but it's just as cool to read your written thoughts. I hope that you enjoy testing it out over this long weekend :-).

Weeks always start on a Monday, so I get week 2 only a few days after week 1, which is great by me! Game thoughts:

Boogie Loops
Boogie Loops looks cute but is so far incomprehensible. From what I can tell it's a little music creation toy, a la Mario Paint, but I simply don't know what any of it means. Really needs a tutorial or even just a primer on what anything on the screen is.

Crankin's Time Travel Adventure
Crankin's Time Travel Adventure is from a dev team including Keita Takahashi of Katamari fame. It has a similarly confusing start to Boogie Loops in that I didn't initially realise what I was meant to do (and why I was failing) but one I realised the premise it's pretty cool - if tough. I got through to level 18 and stopped for now. It's part puzzle, part execution - sort of reminds me of Ghost Trick x Vib Ribbon or maybe Mon Amour, but I read some comparisons to bullet hell and yeah that works as a description. A few of the levels had me a little frustrated once I'd "solved" them and just had to get the execution down, but I'm also still getting used to using the crank.

Current ratings:

Casual Birder - 7/10
Crankin's Time Travel Adventure - 6/10
Whitewater Wipeout - 5/10
Boogie Loops - 3/10

Definitely a pocket sized handheld :datass:

Wow! That's a lot smaller than I was expecting (no context etc), Orange - but the design looks to be terrific! In another place and time I'd love to get one myself. It seems that the games are a wee bit hit and miss but I think that's to be expected, really; hopefully there'll be enough good ones to make this system popular.

I'm looking forward to reading and seeing more about Playdate!

Good spot Jawa - it took me straight back to the C64 as well!

Great work Orange - massively impressive.

Thought I would share this launch card for Resonant Tale on device (how it appears in the game list).

Getting closer to completeness now but still a way to go!

Is the lack of backlight a problem in your experience?

Not a problem in the same way it wasn't a problem with my GBC or GBA (and it's a much clearer screen than both of those, especially in bright light). It obviously does mean I have to position myself so the screen is being lit by something.

Such a neat little device. I’m so tempted to get one (more so if I hadn’t just got the Evercade). What’s the availability situation now?

RKN - just a suggestion - have you tried removing the shading/pattern from inside the text, so it pops a bit more? Might stand out more in a storefront situation.

I just looked and all they're saying is that new orders will be shipped in "2023", rinks.
