Gotta say, though, I'm starting to tire of the constant DOTA talk. They insist on warbling on about it for 20 minutes (or more) every week and it's like they are speaking a foreign language to me. Just have no interest in it whatsoever. It's like John Davison's mobile games corner on the old 1up Yours episodes. Like toxin for my ears.

No real DOTA talk in this week's RFM.

And to respond to those who don't like Mitchy D... To a certain extent, yes, I do agree with you folks that Mitch Dyer isn't as easy on the ears as his predecessor (Tyler Barber) - although he has gotten infinitely better as time has gone on. Probably due to more practice speaking in a mic as well as having better rapport with his co-hosts.

No DOTA talk whatsoever this week which was a relief. I enjoyed that episode.

I enjoy every episode... Even if I don't like DOTA (as MOBAs don't appeal to me), I don't mind as I enjoy the hosts' personalities.

The payoff with the troll bear in the latest Idle Thumbs was amazing.

It's picked up quite a bit recently as it seems the consistent trio has gone back to Chris, Jake, and Nick.

The bear defusal was filmed too. :)

Idle Thumbs has been ace over the last few weeks, and I think Idle Weekend has very quickly become excellent too. I was worried it would just be an Idle Thumbs B-Side, but it's a very different podcast built around a pre-decided "feature" discussion each week. Danielle's great in it, and Rob Zachny seems to be a podcasting machine.

Thumbs has improved. I think it's because Danielle left they have made an effort to actually play games as they don't have her to pick up the slack.

I think that's more due to development of Firewatch finally rounding off.

To be honest I felt that Danielle didn't mesh too well with Idle Thumbs on many episodes. She played a lot more games than the others, and often much more diverse games too which was refreshing, but as a result her input didn't tend to lead to interesting discussions. She'd describe a bunch of games, the others would ask a couple of questions and that would be it. That wasn't the case for every episode or anything, but I think Idle Weekend is a much better fit for her.

Great Comedy Button last week. I continue to be amazed by the things that Anthony comes out with  How has that man continually found employment with the stories he tells on the show.

Might try it again if Danielle has left, she is the female Arthur Gies. The Shadow of Mordor episode was just so dreadful that I unsubscribed and never looked back.

I think that's fair. She was great as a guest but a combination of things made some of the episodes where she was a regular feel flat.

Loving Idle Weekend for the most part, Danielle and Rob Zacny bounce off each other really well. It's become it's own thing very quickly too, rather than being every other podcast.

What don't you understand? The episode in which they discussed the sexist and racist undertones in The Shadow or Mordor was the peak (at least before I stopped listening) of manufactured controversy on the show and the point which I gave up on it.

I think it's a bit much to suggest they manufactured a controversy out of it. From what I remember they discussed how there's a disconnect between Talion being this noble hero and the sheer amount of violence directed towards a single enemy.

They discussed race too, something not exactly unheard of in analysis of Tolkein's work, and I think in the episode after someone emailed in a description of The Last Ringbearer which fit the general tone of what they were getting at previously.

There was no tone of outrage, no real soapbox style talking, no call for a boycott. I don't understand the controversy over discussing the themes of the game the way they did.

Especially as they liked it. There was certainly no "outrage" there unless I'm really misremembering things. I'm struggling to think of anything close to "manufactured controversy" on the show, unless you count beargate which I suppose technically qualifies. ;)

Maybe we should all go back and listen but I specifically remember them talking about the introduction sequence and making a huge deal about the stealth mechanic being shown to the player as sneaking up on your wife. That was manufactured controversy.

I also just found Danielle particularly grating.

Have listened to the last two Idle Thumbs and they were pretty good. Hopefully the few episodes I really disliked were anomalies or down to my growing hatred of Arthur Gies at the time affecting my judgement.

Incredibly depressing Comedy Button this week :( Brian just found out his mother doesn't have long to live. Great listen, though.
