I missed out on the PS1 launch because I decided to get a Sega Saturn instead, well my brother did. I remember going into Electronics Boutique and half wanting to get the PS1. Everyone at school was talking about Tekken and Ridge Racer, but the sight of Daytona USA made my mind up. I remember going to Sega World or Sega Park and playing on the stunning Coin-Op, wishing I could play it at home. Yes, the conversion was poor, but it had the music and was in 3D!

We really are spoilt these days in terms of technology in our home consoles, but the magic that was once there in gaming is fading year upon year.

I hated PlayStation at first, it was stepping on SEGA and Nintendo's turf and other than WipEout the early games were a load of crap. I couldn't understand why everyone at school bought one when NiGHTS, Virtua Fighter 2 and Sega Rally were way beyond anything on it. Slowly got won round to it after Resi Evil, FFVII and Gran Turismo came out.

Know what you mean about the magic, that's all down to the internet though, apart from magazines you knew nothing about games until you bought them, nowadays there's countless trailers and videos to watch that really does ruin it for you.

Not sure about that, Saturn was already past it's peak, other than Goldeneye the N64 games had been out for a year in Japan.

From 1997 FFVII and Tomb Raider 2 are the only top top PlayStation games I can name off the top of my head. 1996 had Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, F1, WipEout 2097 and Tekken 2.

Many memories of playing this system over friends' houses, but I was firmly an N64 kid back in the day. I wouldn't mind picking up an American PlayStation at some point though (American so I can play games in 60Hz), should get a little collection going for it :)

Playing twin snakes this weekend reminded me how incredible the original Metal Gear Solid is.

£5 for a Playstation Official Magazine, them were the days, nagging my mum for them. Those black demo discs were just magical.
I remember the Legend of Dragoon demo made me cry... and the aforementioned Rollcage was fun too. They had funky menu music those discs as far as I remember.

What an amazing console it was. Crash Team Racing is still playable nowadays, such a shame Naughty Dog and Insomniac turned their backs on Spyro and Crash. :(

Demo discs sometimes had actual music on them if you put them into your CD player

I miss that generation of console. PlayStation, N64 and Saturn were the high point in gaming for me

I remember getting the tomb raider demo disc, and then listening to the music in my cd player for ages

EDIT: No way! I Just put the original ridge racer disc in and Itunes picked all the info up

Playstation era was so weird. Even after the Dreamcast came out you could be forgiven for not knowing about it because the playstation over shadowed it that much. Growing up I didn't know what a dreamcast was until around summer 2000, I played one for the first time a year later.
Playstaion era did move fast though. Like it didn't completely take off until 1996 (that's when it got big) but every year that was dozens of A-AAA titles and each years managed to top the last. Even after the PS2 release the console was getting good support.

My favorite series is by far the Metal Gear Solid series. The gameplay, the story telling, everything is so finely woven and of such epic proportion

There are so many classic and great games on the PS1 (thats why i collect PS1), but MGS stands out for me

It's when gaming changed forever. The arrival of 3D on home consoles brought that real wow factor and Nintendo did their finest stuff on the N64. Even the saturn was significant for me as it was my first games console, a bit late in the day yes, but still good, although the first 2 saturns I got did not work lol.

Sony did so much for gaming, infact without the original playstation gaming would not have grown so rapidly and we probably would not even have a games forum!

Like I've said before, every year was like a huge leap forward in that generation. I can't tell the difference between games released this year and 2007.

Hard to believe we got Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Mario 64 (Jap), NiGHTS, F1, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Tekken 2, C&C Red Alert and F1 all in the space of a year.

I thought i was the only one who felt this way. What a magical time, so many great games and so much fun. I don't know why but the PSone feels so different compared to the ps2 that they really don't feel like the same type of console.
