Great article on how PlayStation became a symbol of youth culture in the mid 90s.

“Having been part of the late 80s rave and underground-clubbing scene, I recognised how it was influencing the youth market. In the early 90s, club culture started to become more mass market, but the impetus was still coming from the underground, from key individuals and tribes.

“What it showed me was that you had to identify and build relationships with those opinion-formers – the DJs, the music industry, the fashion industry, the underground media.”

By 1997, there were 52 clubs in the UK alone with dedicated PlayStation rooms. Sony’s other regional offices caught on, and the company was soon sponsoring extreme-sports events and music festivals around the world, including Big Love, Tribal Gathering and later, Lollapalooza.

Famously, the company produced a cardboard flyer for the 1996 Glastonbury festival featuring a PlayStation logo and the words “More powerful than God”. The card was serrated into small sections, ‘coincidentally’ perfect to provide filters – or “roaches” – for joints. It was the phrase that ended up causing more controversy, however.

I'm too young to remember 'PlayStation rooms' in nightclubs though.

On the other hand, there may not be a PSN without XBL, we could've been left with PS2's chaotic infrastructure.

I don't think I could go back to playing the Wipeout series on PS1; the control mechanisms and technical limitations would be just a wee bit too frustrating.

Even so, I'd love to get back into Wipeout on the PS3 - that version still looks and plays wonderfully well. It seems odd (bar Psygnosis no longer existing) that we haven't seen a new version for PS4.

I'd love to have WipEout HD on PS4 as a cross-buy, it was the first game I ever saw in 1080p and it still looks lush.

God I miss thumbing through the old Argos etc catalogues, lusting after games, waiting for your birthday and Christmas hoping you'll get one of them if you hint strongly enough.

Wasn't Street Fighter II £79.99 when it came out on the SNES?

When you factor in inflation and development costs the complaints are simply ridiculous.

We are complaining about the price of games 20 years ago. The pricing is so stupid that I am refusing to build a time machine to go back and buy them.

Looking at that poll of playstation game series just reminds me how awesome the N64 was in comparison.
