Well everything felt new and fresh on PS1, where as most of PS2's big franchises had already been established in the previous generation.

the leap from megadrive to playstation was mind blowing for me. Playing wipeout on launch day in currys was fcking incredible, i'd never seen anything like it

Even my parents were sold on it (not easy with gaming attitudes being the way they were back then)

The last generation didn't bring the same kind of paradigm shift, it'll probably be remembered for online gaming, this gen might be remembered for motion control, neither are as exciting as that switch to 3D.

I think the big switch that gen was taking gaming out of the bedroom and into the living room.

:fp:

Back on topic, I still think of the PlayStation as the best console ever. The amount of great games available was just staggering, each one offering things you'd just not been able to experience before.

Playing ridge racer in the arcades, then coming home and firing up my new copy was just

It's up there. I prefer it to the PS2, I think the PS3 is very reminiscent of PlayStation, with so many original games and ideas. Which I'm glad about, I thought the PS2 was pretty generic :shifty:

I got a Saturn rather than PlayStation near the launch, possibly a while after actually and I was the odd one out at school. I remember everyone talking about Tekken and Ridge Racer at the time and seeing that basketball advert on TV at the time. It's weird because I was going to get a PlayStation, but I think it was my brother who convinced me to get the Saturn, which only worked on my third purchase as the first two were faulty! :fp:

I eventually traded in my Saturn at CEX for a PlayStation and Resident Evil, but did not get into it for a good while after. I do remember enjoying the Gran Turismo games and Toca Touring Cars, but missed out on Ridge Racer and Tekken. Tekken 2 and 3 were immense though.

Didn't get my PlayStation til Christmas 1998. Got a Saturn for Christmas 1996, I did like Tekken 2 and WipEout but at the time there was nothing on PlayStation that interested me, wasn't even my second choice, I was tempted to hold on til N64 came out for Mario 64

When I got my Saturn, NiGHTS, Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter 2 were by far the best games available in that generation. But the decline steadily started in 1997, by that time the PlayStation was in full flow. My fave games in order...

1. Resident Evil 1
2. Resident Evil 2
3. Tekken 3
4. Tomb Raider 1
5. Metal Gear Solid
6. Ridge Racer Type 4
7. Final Fantasy VII
8. Wip3out
9. Soul Blade
10. Tekken 2

Does anyone remember Legend of Dragoon? I've spent the last half hour racking my brains as to what it was called, now I remember that it was one of my favourite RPGs when I was a kid. Reading a few reviews it looks like it got a little slated for generic gameplay but I loved it as I had only really played the Final Fantasies before it. Might have to look for a rom of it now, I can't really get a feel of what it was like from the youtube videos that are online.

There's a lot of forgotten classics on the PS1. I loved the whole era. I was always renting games from our newsagents or borrowing from my sister's then boyfriend (now brother in law).

Found this good article, aiming to rediscover some on there, forgot all about skullmonkeys!

I remember reading of a game in the very last issue of OPM (#108) called Buttsubushi.

Image

They actually put it in their top 10 PS1 games ever list, which seems incredibly curious, and rated it 9/10 when they reviewed it (it seems to have been released in late 2003). Yet, it's so obscure, there's next to nothing about the game on the Internet. I can't even find out what it's about. Anybody have any info on it?

Aren't Phoenix those guys who make those shitty budget games? Sure it wasn't a rib for the last issue?

Looking at this list, they are:

It probably was a joke entry in the list. I'd still like to know more about the game though, it seems stupidly rare.

If you have a PSX emulator there seems to be a few roms floating about.

Pro evo was like nothing I'd ever played. It felt like football.

The reason I bought a PS2.

Fabian Delph is a banana split.
